Men Behind The Sun

The Company Line

This is a "voyeuristic insight" into Japanese atrocities that they committed on the Chinese in World War II. They used the Chinese as "guinea pigs in gruesome experiments to create mutated plague bacteria used for bacterial warfare." They claim that the Japanese government wished that this story would not be known and that it will "provoke, anger and sicken." They also say that this film is a "chilling, realistic portrait showing the brutal torture and experimentation that took place in the Japanese terror camps."

Following to the reviews the most people only seem to have watched this film for its gore. However, relating to the real historical background not the movie itself is perverse, its more extremely frightening what sadistic atrocities humans are able to do to each other! Personally, I still havent decided in which category to put this film into, if its an ambitioned anti war drama like "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930) or "Soldier Blue" (1970), or if its the worst form of voyeurism where the producers only wanted to bring their sick phantasies on the screen... Ive seen many controversial films from the 1970s like "Cannibal Holocaust", "I Spit on your Grave" or "Blood Sucking Freaks": gruesome stuff, but after all harmless entertainment in comparison to Geoffrey Hos deeply disturbing flick! Nothing is fiction in "Men behind the Sun", everything is real! Extremely nerve-racking scenes of frostbite experiments, an autopsy on a living boy or cruel animal snuff will haunt you even days later! A film that crosses borders! Believe me: Im not in a hurry to see this again!!!

Ugh. This movie is terrible to watch. I found it harder to watch than Salo, quite honestly. But I also think Salo is a movie that tries really hard to be shocking at times, wrapped in a warm coat of utter dullness.

In Men Behind the Sun, there's a part where they freeze a prisoner's arms by pouring cold water on them outside, then warm them back up in a tank of water, and then PULL THE SKIN OFF. Dear god.
