Hi,
I really need to save, seriously. I was in Korea before for a year and a half teaching and did manage to. However, I then did an MA on return to England and blew all of it and some. I was wondering what sort of salary I should be looking for now? Is 2.3 acceptable for standard hagwon hours (30). I can`ty really think of anywhere but Korea to go to save and I am not gdoing too well in England or Ireland as it`s so expensive.
Thanks!

If you have your MA and experience, apply directly to universities. Given the reduced number of contact hours compared to hakwon teaching, most people can make a lot on the side. Most universities offer paid overtime, and some even farm out editing or affiliated teaching at their institutes. You'll save. |

Hi, Dawn,
When I taught in Daegu, I was receiving 2.5 for 28 hours, no prep-time...I also had my Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Writing/English, which they paid me more--Hagwon...
I noticed, however, that in the 30 hour range for Hagwons, "they" have been offering 2.0, 2.2...
Yes, as you know, in spite of the pay, you can save in Korea...and as you know also--MONEY COMES AND MONEY GOES, yes?
Best wishes on your return to Korea venture! |

Avoid hakwon jobs and you'll do well. |

With an MA, unis are the best money for the hours worked.... There are some specialty jobs that also pay quite well that will have more hours and more pay, but you have to hunt for those.... If you can't get a uni for September, try to get a 6 month contract ending in February so that you can look for uni jobs for the March term.... And don't believe anyone who says you can't get a six month contract or visa.... I've had 4 of them over the years.... |
