N Korea calls for flood assistance
North Korea is seeking international assistance after flooding left hundreds dead or missing and swept away many buildings, according to a UN aid agency spokesman.
At least 30,000 homes, more than 540 bridges and sections of railway were destroyed in the rain and floods, the Korean Central News Agency said on Tuesday.
Paul Risley, Asia spokesman with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), said: "If the figures are borne out by our own assessment, then we are very concerned that this is a significant emergency crisis.
"It is still very early in this process but we have received a preliminary request from North Korean authorities, asking for our assistance."
Risely said a UN agency assessment team left the capital, Pyongyang, on Tuesday, headed for flood-hit areas.
