Try to do a day trip to Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach on Ko Pha Ngan. Avoid Haad Rin, unless the full moon party / drug scene interests you. Angthong Marine National Park from Nathon Pier is also recommended. http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/photo75928.htm

3 pages of photos I've taken on & around Ko Samui. Enjoy:

Bophut / Maenam are cool, beach is OK for that part of Samui.. i found a lot of european families there, but you're close enough to Chaweng if you fancy a night out or just haven't seen ladyboys / starbucks / sunburned drunk foreigners before. But if you want somewhere quiet you're way better, imho, heading to Ko Pha Ngan.. west coast is great if you want a quiet bungalow on the beach, north coast if you want to get as far away from it as possible. accom can be easily be booked on the net, even in some really rootsy places

pm if you have any questions

Thanks for the tips....

Was looking for more of a Euro scene so that is why i chose Bophut as am past the drug/ladyboy/i am a dickhead foreigner/full moon party days...

Don;t want it too quiet but just want a nice mix.....

A day trip to Angthong Marine National Park is on my list of things to do....plus lots of thai food.

what is the level of people bothering you to buy stuff like??

One thing that turns me off Phuket is the constant bothering but i am under the impression Ko samui is a little more chilled in this regard....

Apart from 2 Europeans on motorbikes at Chaweng, who talked me into checking out a time share resort, I had no problems with any high pressure sales. Samui is a lot less stressful than Patong. Enjoy! And don't forget the Big Buddha at Maenam / Bophut.

Stayed at Smile house in February wtih the gf. Pretty decent place with an ok free breakfast.

Looked at some other places as well, but didnt like them too much. Also stayed at SHades resort beside Smile. Was a bit cheaper than Smile, but no hot water.

Isn't Bophut too isolated?

That's exactly Bophut. Only real hassle are the 2-3 Indian tailors that want you to buy from there store. Other than that, really chill and European. Couldn't even get the Superbowl over there. Nobody knew that it was on.

Sounds like i made the right choice then...

The missus and I just like to chill out and do things at our own pace when on vacation and not have too many people there....

Really looking foward to it...first time i will have been through an
immigration checkpoint in 15 months...it is killing me.

The one thing that really sticks out was the Eco-Marine trip. Was a good time, but don't waste your money on the elephant trekkiing at the end of the day. It consists of walking an elephant up the hill and down the hill. Then they try to get you to buy some crumby digital photographs of yourself up there. Avoid the last part. You really aren't going to want to do that and be sent to some god-awful tourist trap shopping center at the end of a long hot day.

I say avoid koh samui and go to koh phangan ( its cheaper and quieter)
Next to had rin is a beach called haad yuan. It can only be reached by boat taxi. It is very quiet as compared to had rinn and ten times more beautiful. The food there is amazing. It is also super cheap to stay (300-600 baht a night). We took a big group of our friends there recently and they all agreed its paradise.
