is that it's kind of flattering, in a weird sort of way. 
Somehow, we actually threaten others with our existence to a point where we're driving some people nuts enough to post entire threads about how annoying we are! Woo hoo!!! But just in Korea. We're still wallflowers in most of the world. |

| Sorry, but I totally disagree. I find my country's general attitide of "Notice me! notice me!" to be a little pathetic really. It's a great country, and maybe it should get more attention on the world stage than it does, but not for the stupid things like the obsession with mediocre coffeeshops. |

Being one of three English speaking countries in the G8 ain't so bad!
I do wish Canada would set a real example for the world environmentally, though.
Canada is fairly unspoiled, and I imagine that unless the rest of the world changes, they are going to plow over Canada unless Canada doesn't exploit itself into the ground first. |

As an American, I really find no reason to put down Canada. I've made alot of nice friends from up yander. Of course I like to tease them about saying "eh?" all the time. But it's all in good fun.
Actually I am thinking of immigrating there...my country has gone to hell as far as I'm concerned. |

Yeah, I am a bit confused by that as well. I mean, I do like Canada.. but there are MANY parts of the U.S. that has very liberal politics. Stick with them - if its purely on politics.
If someone just wants to get out of the U.S., the world is fairly big. I dont see the purpose of emigrating to the most similar country in the world. |

Canada is a great country (I've spent 6 happy months there on 3 occasions) yet, I do feel the Canadians in Korea are a little too patriotic. Or self-centered.
For example, I've noticed Canadians speak of prices in Canadian dollars to non-Canadians. Why? We have no idea what the Canadian dollar is worth (well, I do, but many don't). I would never dream of expressing prices in British pounds to anyone but Brits.
And the Tim Hortons obsession is too weird. |

| I'm from Canada so I know what a Tim Hornton's is. It looks like McDonald's inside, except it's in whites and browns, not yellows and oranges and so on like McDonalds. It has donuts. There are floor to ceiling windows and the tables are the McDonalds style. There's a drive through so you can pick up donuts and coffee. The coffee is good, and strong. You can get a good jolt out of one cup, and if you're sitting it's in a ceramic mug. The coffee is always freshly brewed. It's not 'amazing' coffee, but it's strong and good and it's a nice place to sit and talk, look out the window, and get a coffee get up and go feeling. |

| I don't get the Tim Horton's thing either, and I'm surrounded by them. Why dream about Tim Horton's when Korean coffeeshops seem to be well on there way towards making a decent espresso? |

Actually, that was what I was getting at with my first post (tongue and cheek, as are you I imagine).
Peppermint, I think you misunderstood me.
What I meant is just that Canada bashing is NOT a common thing anywhere in the world, except perhaps on this forum, and it doesn't bother me at all -- it amuses me that here, and here only, Canada is powerful enough to warrant attack!
Oh wait, there was "Blame Canada" and the whole Southpark movie.... but does that count? I think some of the writers may have been Canadian....
As for Tim Horton's, well, it was late in coming to my neck of the woods in Canada, so it's no big deal to me. I have heard that there is actually something very addictive besides the caffeine that is added to some coffees (something related to nicotine? I can't remember), and that the Tim Horton's stuff has more of it than any other coffee -- as much as it is legally allowed to have. When you see people in line for their morning fix on the way to work -- especially those who drive 30 minutes out of their way, past several fast food places that also sell coffee, it seems somewhat believable. But hey, I'm not offering proof.
I actually don't have Canadian flag patches or magnets -- I do have one T-shirt that was a gift, but I usually wear it to bed. All the other nationalistic stuff that was given to me by friends and family I gave away while on trips in Thailand and Indonesia. No reason to give Canada T-shirts to Koreans -- they make their own!
Actually, being in Korea has cured me of my nationalistic tendencies. I no longer feel the need to point out that Avril Lavigne, Jim Carrey, etc. are Canadian (Jim's now a Canadian American anyway, right?), or wear my Canadianness like a badge, or feel smug for not being American. I witnessed to many fellow, well-meaning Canadians doing these things and it just isn't pretty.

I don't understand what you mean by powerful enough to warrant attack, I see a lot of people being obnoxious enough to deserve an attack though.
The jibes about maple leaves on backpacks are just childish but there's a hell of a lot of times when I'm really ashamed of the rep that Canada has here. A lot of my compatriots are very very smug about their nationality, which is silly to begin with, and their reasons for being smug are even worse. If you're going to be proud, be proud of things like:
-highest rate of post secondary education in the OECD,
-the most immigrants per capita,
-the lowest deaths by gunshot per capita

Plus the weather sucks. If I could live and work anywhere, it would probably be Australia. |
