Never someone I paid a lot of attention to. Not even sure if I ever watched a single episode of his talk-show. I knew who he was, of course, and that he also produced game shows that I occassionally watched. But overall, I think he kind of catered to an older audience.

Merv Griffin was a class act, something increasingly difficult to find in Hollywood these days.

He was an active listener who never planned a joke or a glib line at the expense of a guest. He was an eternal optimist who lived life to the fullest by all accounts. He made far more friends than adversaries--indeed, can't think of anyone in show biz who disliked him.

He was himself, had an infectious laugh, and a twinkle in the eye. Almost got Carson's job after Paar left. He didn't need to be snarky like Letterman, or sneer, or bark, or swear.

And he was a self-made man who even outsmarted Donald Trump in the real estate market--twice. That says a lot, too.

Johnny, Merv, Di-ck C.--all cut from the same cloth.

Hell, I hadn't known he was still alive! His old talk show was lame as hell, but apparently he was the brainchild behind JEOPARDY! and for that he deserves a tip of the hat.

Years ago Rick Moranis did a great parody of Griffin on SCTV.
