Have just seen this post in the Job Information journal and felt it was a good cause that could do with some extra attention.

The Human Rights Commission Of Korea is currently fielding complaints from workers (including foreigners) who feel they have been discrimated against. The all too common practice of Korean schools demanding a photograph of potential teachers before an interview is granted constitutes discrimination and the HR commission would like to hear about it. If you feel that the way you look or the colour of your skin has nothing to do with your ability to teach, you can email them at [email protected] or fax them at (82-2)2125-9812. You don't have to give your name, but you should report the name of the institute and their contact information.

It never ceases to amaze me that someone would go out of their way not to show a school their photo when asked... dragging it all out, only to have the school dump them at a later date after so much time has been wasted.

If a school wants your photo, it's obvious why. Why would you want to purse the possibility of working for someone if you're afraid they won't hire you because of your color? Don't waste anyone's time -- especially your own. Go ahead and report it to place listed above, but just don't waste your time with those schools.

Besides they will need your picture eventually to get the immigration work underway. Just fork it over, if they don't like you 'cause you look funny then that is there loss and your gain.

Before coming to Korea I was teaching in Europe, where all CVs(resumes) have a picture attached. So, when I came to Korea I did not think twice about it.
Note: In France they not only want a picture, but your cover letter must be hand written so they can have your handwriting analyzed

I'd rather be discriminated against and not get a job then have a bastard of a boss who hates me because of how I look...

I'm sure that racism etc. are pretty rampant when it comes to hiring for these jobs though, but there's not all that much that can be done about it in the short term unfortunately Sad
