Hi guys,
A few friends and I will be heading to Beijing over Chuseok. I'm wondering if anyone can reccommend an area of the city to stay in? I've combed through my Lonely Planet book and am a bit overwhelmed with all there is to do and see. Here's the deal --- we're three girls in our mid to late 20s looking to soak up the sights, shop our socks off, and of course, enjoy out a night or two. Is there a particular area which is fairly central to most we'd enjoy (aside from the Great Wall which I realize will not be in the proximity)? We were hoping to stay somewhere which is fairly touristy (similar to Khao San Road in Bangkok, though not necessarily as hyped up) for the main purpose of being near a few fun pubs, and travel agents to access the sights we'll need to see. From what I've gathered Chaoyang and Xicheng may be our best bets. If you have any advice, including hotel recs, it'd be greatly appreciated! |

What is your budget? Wangfujing is where you should be - Wangfujing Dajie (avenue) is where all the major shops are and it is centrally located.

thanks for your your tip. our budget for accommodations is preferably up to $80USD/night. i checked out wangfujing and it sounds prime. i couldn't quite tell which area it is located in (i'm a bit challenged reading maps). the guide lists chongwen, south chaoyang, dongcheng, chaoyang, fengtai, and xuanwu as the prime areas for accommodations. does wangfuking dajie fall somewhere in there? |

The City Central Hotel and Hostel has hostel rooms with a bathroom down the hall and regular hotel rooms. It is located north of the train station next on the corner next to the post office. It is also near a subway stop which you use to walk under the busy street. Buy a card for the subway and it will get you to most places. There is also a guide in the packet in your room with bus numbers for most attractions.
There is a tour package desk in the lobby that can sell you a bus ride to the Great Wall. I bought number six which is a bus ride, a hike on the wall, and dinner. For a little extra you can take a cable car instead of doing the hike. I also went to a gymnastics show.
Whatever you do don't go with anyone at the train station or on the street who wants you to go to a hotel. I did that the first night and paid way to much for a filthy room. |
