Anyone here know of anyone / a company that can format a dissertation before it heads off to the printers?

Thanks.

Tell me what you need and I might be able to help you out with a couple of ideas. I am guessing you have it in very rough draft form...How much time do you have to finish, and where are you having it printed to start with? There are some basic dissertation templates that work wonderfully if you want to use them. They are straight forward and can be easily managed...If you are simply straped for time, then it is likely a local company may be better for you if you have any idea at all...PM me or post a reply here and I will try to help if I can...

1. Hope you're printing in Korea. Costs about a tenth of what it runs in the U.S.

2. Even if you format in advance, individual printers can still screw it up. Do the formatting yourself, then take it to a printer in Korea. They'll burn off a demo copy and work with you to get it fixed and formatted til it's lookin good.

Sound advice...I also wonder if using a Korean doc program would make a difference in how much 'alteration' the printer would need. I mean, would using MS Word throw them a curve ball?

What are the format requirements of your university? In terms of layout (margins, spacing, pagination, etc.), you have to meet those. And they will check. Really, this is stuff you should be able to do yourself on any computer. It just takes time.

Beyond that, I hope you aren't talking about stuff like meeting a standard like APA or MLA. I would hope that you've been taking care of that as you went along.

Most of the Korean printing services can work with MS Word, but they don't like it. They prefer to use their HWP program files which are all written in Korean, making it easier for them...

There are number of templates from universities that can be downloaded which have the formats already built in. It only takes copy and paste as you suggested...The APA or MLA formats are easy to find on the Internet as well. I don't use the websites I found several years ago very often anymore, but if this is something you don't do a lot it can be somewhat intimidating, so people should use the templates as a first option...

From my personal experience, all of the major projects I have done since living in Korea have been done using some kind of document template, whether I was working on a textbook, an article for publication or writing comprehensive study materials for my public school. Last year I wrote 9 books and they were all done on templates that I had to modify a little to get them to work for my specific project...

So, it is wise to do what you suggested and use the templates which are fairly easy to find by doing a Goggle search...Most of the templates I am referring to will easily accommodate documents up to 150+ pages. including citations....

tob55,

Thanks again for all the info! Very Happy

Yup, there are a fair number of straight forward, simple templates out there for dissertations, journal articles, etc. Mainly at university websites.

As to what tob55 wrote, if one doesn't do this sort of thing regularly, it can a bit frustrating and intimidating. Surprisingly, many advisors and staff generally don't know how to format a dissertation - at least where I studied! It's all left up to the student to go and figure out

Here are some templates if anyone is interested:

Having some experience working with a publisher in Korea, I suggest formatting the document in Word, for the sake of simplicity and ease, and then printing it as a PDF. I have never had a problem submitting manuscripts as PDF files, though I've had trouble when submitting Word files. The company with which I work re-formatted the Word files as HWP files and I was very dissatisfied with the results. Thereafter I've always submitted PDFs.

Best of luck.

.pdf...seconded (and my university mandated that we supply them a pdf file too).
