I've spoken with Sally at UBC Consulting about this school but I'm having a hard time finding any information about them here. I did a search on google and found that one of their ex-teachers was disgruntled, but there were also many positive comments about the school.

I've also got a sample contract, standard M-F 40 hour work week, 30 contact hours, includes flight, pension, health, and a meager 10 days vacation (including public holidays, so maybe I should negotiate that point).

Any information you guys could give me regarding the school (or UBC, for that matter) is, as always, greatly appreciated!

The director has a fairly bad reputation around Daegu. My sources tell me that he habitually cheats people on their final pay. The following is a report from a former teacher.

Quote:
Hello there -

I am one of a number of teachers who has been cheated by Kxxxxx at St. Paul Academy in Daegu since it opened in 2001. K**** plays fast and loose with contracts, but follows them to the letter when it comes to his employees' behavior. Every teacher who has finished a contract
at St. Paul Academy has been cheated in some way by Kxx. He deducted 1.2 million won from my final pay for another teacher's expenses. He even itemized it on my paycheck as expenses for the plane ticket and utilities for another teacher who had been smart and done a midnight runner. This was after his repeated promises to honor our agreement and give me my pay in full on my last day of work. Kxx then promised to reimburse me for half of the salary withheld after I left via wire transfer. Of course, he hadn't three months later, so I made a phone call to him, at which point he stammered out a list of fabricated contract violations on my part (this guy has a lot of nerve) and said I had no recourse. I know better, and am now pursuing this through an attorney in Korea.

In another case, Kxxxxx refused to honor the contractually-guaranteed promise of return airfare at the end of the 12 month contract. He reneged at the last minute, leaving the teacher to find his own way back to North America. With two other teachers, he refused to pay them their one-month bonus salary unless they agreed to work three extra weeks, unpaid.

Kxx has also been known to hire teachers without work visas, loading them with hours and paying them salaries as low as 1.5 million per month for over 30 classroom hours. He talks from both sides of his mouth, praising a teacher in person and holding meetings behind the teacher's back undermining his or her teaching methods. This school should be avoided at all costs - it isn't apparent until too late that K*****'s business methods are devious and underhanded.

A friend of mine worked there and she always had stories (not good ones) to tell about the director.

I knew a guy who worked at the Jisan Location back in '05. He complained that there was a lot expected in terns of workload, lesson plans and office hours. He never mentioned any pay problems... only that the management was rather harsh and demanding.

Before you sign a labor contract with this school, or any other, you should ask specific questions to former and past employees. Talk with them when they're away from the place of employment or via e-mail. Here are a couple questions:

1) Does your employer make deductions from your monthly salary for income taxes?

2) Does your employer make deductions from your monthly salary for medical insurance (National Healthcare Insurance Plan: Mandatory as of Jan 1, 2006), and contribute an equal amount to the National Health Insurance Corporation?

3) Does your employer make deductions for the National Pension Plan?

4) Does your employer have a history of pocketing (employees are familiar with this term) deductions (1-4)?

5) Does your employer pay employees their severance pay and provide them with the return airline ticket upon completion of the labor contract?

6) Does your employer pay you on time?

7) How many classes do you teach per week?

*) How many days of paid vacation (annual leave) do you get?

9) How many employees and students are at the school?

10) What's the surrounding area that the school is in like? (Ask about the main attractions and fun stuff).

Oohh, my alma mater. I worked at the original St. Paul Academy, in Jisan-dong, several years ago. The students were great. The director is a devious snake. I made the mistake of giving him advance warning (two months) of when I was leaving, and even helped him recruit a new teacher. He reciprocated by screwing me out of about 1.4 million won.

I realize this is a few months too late, but I hope the OP didn't take the job there. Kim Do-gyeong doesn't deserve to be in business for himself.

I think you should check up with UBC once more, because I know that St. Paul's Academy actually closed down not too long ago. A lot of shady happenings at that school.

If you had any idea how happy this makes me. Can you give me any details? This was the place in Jisan-dong, just behind the Dong-A, right?

Hi..

St Paul's has closed down and now has some new owners. They are a young brother and sister team. I met them and they offered me the job. Very friendly with some good ideas. So it is not the snake that used to run it. I think they are calling the new school DBS or something.

Their father is going to help teach at the school so I think that they will not try and bend you over, so to speak.
