Lately, I've been thinking about doing a Master's in Education, online. Therefore, I am wondering if anyone has obtained a graduate degree online, from America. Also, which school you enrolled in, and why.

I've heard that the traditional-style, home-bound student versus the online, distant education student usually has the upper-hand.

I'd appreciate your opinions and input. Thanks a bunch in advance.

I believe a good education can be gotten from an online program. Unfortunately there are stereotypes that have been perpetuated by online-only schools, and stereotypes are a big part of the hiring process. I think it's getting better, especially in the overseas community where access to worthwhile in-residence programs taught in English is nonexistent or prohibitively expensive.

If you're going to do an online degree, I recommend getting it from an accredited school that primarily offers in-residence courses.

I personally prefer being in the classroom (like the interaction, being able to get on the spot feedback etc.) but have had really good experience with an online course at UNC, Chapel Hill (don't know if they do ELT stuff though). I've done online stuff with other, highly recognized schools in the UK and Australia, but have to say for student-centeredness (if that's a word) and just plain having their stuff together UNC is great. Hoping to do the PhD with them in a year or two.

UNC has online programs? Thanks, I'll definitely have to check that out.

They certainly have some - I've just finished the last unit of a (year-long) certification program online.

I stood on a screening committee a few years ago, but didn't recall coming across any applicants who obtained their MA's online. Anyhow, I'll be looking into it, thank you!
