I know that men hold their girl's purses and bags, but the number of teenage boys cooing about their young lovers kind of makes me sick.

Today, I was in the coffee shop, and sitting next to me was this young couple. The girl, maybe 17, was obviously helping her boyfriend of the same age study math. She was sort of serious about it, and as she would lean into him, he would giggle and bite her arm, in which she giggled, yelled at him, then told him some "ex-suh equals y" equation. She hit him (it looked like it kind of smarted), and told him to get her some coffee. He ran up immediately and fetched it.

On the subway, I have seen boys lovingly stroking their girl's hair, and she snaps at him. I have definitely noticed that boys look completely into their girlfriends, and the girls look bored.

Just two, perhaps biased, instances, but I don't really know too much about Korean etiquette between teenagers. Do the girls wear the pants?

Oh, come on man, you can't just ask if all relationships between a ton of people are the same.

Maybe for teen boys this is the case, but with guys in their 20s/30s and beyond, it's usually the ladies fawning all over the guys. I saw a girl swabbing out her boyfriend's ears in the airport a few years ago. The Koreans and I looked over in disgust. But I'd probably do that if I had a hot Korean boyfriend, too. I fawned all over my ex. But he wouldn't let me swab his ears at my place. He carried my purse for me too. It just depends on who we're talking about.

I recently had a bartender walk way out into the rain wth no brolly to get me a taxi. He came back walking behind the taxi still getting wet. He made me wait under the roof of the building so I wouldn't get wet. But also Korean men can turn around and be bossy...But, I get turned on thinking of a guy dominating me. I'm from the south. It's sexy.

I agree. There's nothing hotter than a 40ish Korean man with the ajeoshi haircut wearing a pastel colored short-sleeve sweater with elastic waist and armbands, barking orders at me. It makes my panty wet.

Unless an old guy with a towel around his neck and a backpack is beating me with his collapseable metal walking stick, I feel dead inside.

Seems like Princess misunderstood Venus in Furs. Ironically, isn't she some uber-feminist, too? This all seems to contrived and backwards.

The K-guys have got it fine. Role-reversal can be fun.

Were you not 17 or have crushes in your life?

I'm just wondering when Korean chicks will start to grow beards and make the gender reversal complete.

I saw a young couple recently and the guy had his arm around her while fanning her, walking down the street. Like she's some princess or something.

Ralph.

a couple of my 17 year old girl students say they like a guy who they can hit and who will just smile back. Maybe kids here have boyfriends and girlfriends later than western kids, so they're more like a western 13 year old when they have their first relationship? Dunno. The 13 year old NYC princesses I worked with at summer camp last year acted similarly. And the boys LOVED them. The girls acted snobby but then had tons of pressure to perform sexually for the boys (13 year olds!), a huge confusing contradiction for them.
