Korea may decide later this week whether to resume inspections of U.S. beef that were halted in early August because of concerns about mad-cow disease, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said.
A decision may come as early as today, Johanns told reporters today in Washington. Korea, once the third-largest buyer of U.S. beef, halted inspections, effectively blocking imports, after a segment of spinal column was found in a shipment from Cargill Inc. Korea says cattle bones may harbor the agent that causes the brain-wasting livestock illness.
Korea was one of more than 60 nations that banned U.S. beef in December 2003 after an animal was found in Washington state with mad-cow disease. It resumed limited imports last year. Johanns said normalizing beef trade with Korea may be crucial toward winning congressional approval for a $29 billion trade agreement.
Congress "expects beef trade to be solved before they give any serious consideration to the free-trade agreement," he said. Korea imported about $814 million of U.S. beef in 2003, before the United States found its first mad-cow case in December of that year. (Bloomberg)

I have a geat idea for a business here in Korea:
How about opening a butcher shop? I'll buy U.S. beef at a really cheap price, then sell it in my store, but I'll hang a sign which says "Korean Beef"
sorta near the counter. And--the genuis part--I'll sell it for the unreasonably inflated price which Korean beef is normally sold at.
Good idea?????
This, of course, is a joke (in case any crazed netizens are reading); and, I offer this wonderful joke to get us thinking.
How the heck would anyone know the difference????????
What are the chances of your average, everyday, thoroughly honest and upright neighborhood butcher here in Korea doing such a horrible and dishonest thing?
What are the chances that maybe, in several months, some Korean reporter uncovers such reprehensible and totally un-Korean business practices?????
What are the chances?????? |

You are years behind the curve, Mr. exit. Before the ban, that is exactly what many many restaurants did. The only Koreans who knew the difference were the restaurant owners and the bankers who suddenly found fatter bank deposits. |
