Is it easier to get a visa for China or Russia? And is it easier to do it yourself or through a travel agency?

And also, where can I even get passport photos? I've only been here for a week and I'm not in Seoul! Can anyone recommend a place near the Chinese embassy, which is in Myeongdong?

For the chinese visa you need one passport "STYLE" photo. The photo machines in the subway stations work just fine.

As an alternative you can get them done at any of the "KODAK" or other flavor of photo shop or your local HomePlus or E-mart.

The subway machines cost 5000 won and the photo places usually charge about 10k.

It's pretty darn easy through your travel agent. I dropped off my passport, photo, and filled out a form at their office. Then my travel agent took it to the embassy and picked it up for me. I just picked it up from the agent's office a week later. Easy peasy. No need to speak Korean or Chinese or worry about finding hte embassy.

Russsia's fast visa service is fast, its about 1/2 hour. Costs $200. The regular visa is $100 but I don't know the time.

The consulate is near city hall. Look for the large rusty radar antenna on top and a JP Morgan sign.

its easier for china cause you dont need an invitation. you could do it through an agency if theres no consulate near you, but youll pay for it.

passport photos....either find a photo booth in a subway station or find a local photographer.
