|
|
My new hagwon has song classes once a week (for the young kids and the elementary kids). We teach easy songs ("If you're happy and you know it", etc.). It's not bad, but I really want to find a way to make it more exciting. The way it's done right now is, we play the song a couple times, then get the kids to sing along with it a couple times, then they all take turns singing it, then, they'll team up and two students will sing it. There's nothing fun happening though, and it's all just repeating the same song over and over again, like 50 times in one 45 minute class. Damn monotonous for the teacher, and the kids seem bored after a while too.
Any ideas for making a song class more interesting? I'm looking for any activities and games that can be added into the teaching of a song to kids. I was thinking of musical chairs, and maybe some kind of white board game. |

I did a Kindy class once for a friend and played duck, duck, goose. Perhaps you could incorporate that. Or, musical chairs. |

Do you have A/V equipment?
If so, very easy to go beyond the song sheet, TPR, chant type of thing....

Can they read? If so, you can copy the words and whiteout some of them, then have the kids listen and fill in the blanks (this could be done with nouns that are easy to draw). Or you can cut the song up line by line and they have to put all the lines in order. These activities work best the first time the kdis have heard the song.
I've also played a game where all the kids stand in a circle, then thye have to go around saying one line of the song each. If they can't say it, then they ahve to sit down. Last man standing wins. Obviously, thi is best done after the kids know the song pretty well. |

I divid the class up into two or four groups and we make a contest out of the song. You have one groups sing the song and then the next group sing the song and the better group wins. Then I will give the losing team another chacne at trying to win.
Then I will break up the group up into smaller teams of about 3 or 4 students and they will sing the song in front of the class. |

Do a fill in the blanks lyrics sheet. Play the song three or more times let the kids fill in the blanks to what they hear. The play hangman on the words they missed.
I did this for "Take Me Home Contry Roads".

Improves listening skills. It's interesting to see what words the ycome up with and then you can play around with the words, it creates some great conversation.
Also you can change West Virginia to South Korea, blue ridge to Sarak some other river. I changed Miner's lady to Masan lady.
My kids also like Season's in the Sun (Westlife or Terry Jacks) |

After they learn the song, have them substitute words in the song to make it funny.
For example, "You are my Sunshine" can become "You are my pizza" or something that the kids come up with. You just guide it to keep it on track, but let them come up with most of it. |

Do you have Mickey mouse ears. How about dancing around like a monkey and throwing candy at the kids while sing the songs. |
