N Korea building fence border with China: report
Posted 4 hours 59 minutes ago

News reports say North Korea is constructing a fence along its border with China to stop an exodus of its refugees. South Korea's Yonhap news agency, quoting residents in China's border city of Dandung, said North Koreans had been spotted erecting posts for wire fences along the Yalu River that forms the border since a month ago.

It said the 10-kilometre fence, covering a narrow tributary used for illegal border crossers, parallels one already constructed by China last year. Tens of thousands of North Koreans, fleeing hunger or repression in their communist homeland, have crossed the border into China in recent years, putting strain on bilateral relations.

Rights groups estimate there are tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of North Koreans hiding out in north-east China. The refugees often travel on to Mongolia or other South East Asian countries in the hope of winning eventual resettlement in South Korea.

According to the South Korean Government, more than 10,000 North Korean refugees have arrived in the South. In May, a South Korean aid group said North Korea installed surveillance cameras along part of its border with China to try to detect people bidding to escape the impoverished country.
