I've been told Korea shuts down during Chusok and is quite boring. What have you guys done during this time? I'm thinking about a trip outside Korea, but a lot of the prime places seem to be booked up (or won't book until 20 days before the trip). Any suggestions are welcome, but we don't want to go too far and waste days travelling. |

I think it will be very difficult to go anywhere because most flights have been booked full.
Waiting 20 days before a trip? Maybe in normal cases, but this is one of the most travelled holidays in the year. I'd be very surprised if you get a ticket. |

You can still get tickets to HongKong (depart Friday night and return Wednesday afternoon) via Cathay but they will cost you KRW 906,800.00 per seat (economy).
Tickets to Manila are available on PAL for KRW 1,460.000 (economy).
This is MORE THAN double the usual economy fare to these destinations.
Best to stay here and stay close to home. Domestic travel will also be murder (10 hours to drive to Busan from Seoul is common at Chuseok). Most places are only closed on the 25th. They will be open every other day during the holiday.
Book your winter holiday soon or you will be stuck with very high prices or limited destinations as well. |

Does the subway still operate? How about express buses? |

All public transportation continues to run.
The only problem is the highways and expressways get plugged if you are going by bus (or car), leave extra time.
If you don't have train tickets you may not get any now.
Bus terminals will be very busy as well. |

The best thing to do during Chuseok is just party your ass off with legions of other teachers and foreigners for 5 days wherever you happen to live.
It's usually a great time for me to hangout with old friends who I seldom see or don't work near anymore.

I also wanted to get away this Chuseok (I got 10 days off total) - but NO flights anywhere. |
