In a premier American Psychiatric Text Book, "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV)", a Mental Disorder called "Hwa Byeong" is described. This disorder is what is known as a "cultural syndrome" as in, it is specific to a particular culture. That culture being the Korean culture.
Quoting the Psychiatric Times "Hwa-byung is frequently found in middle-aged women of low social class, and in a combined form of depression, anxiety and various somatic symptoms. Physical symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness/fatigue, palpitation, blurred vision, stifling/oppression, sexual dysfunction, insomnia, anorexia, indigestion, weight loss, flushed feeling, mass in the throat or epigastrium, heat sensation, intolerance to heat, multiple pains, sighing, dry mouth and a sensation of pushing-up in the chest. The results suggest also that the psychological symptoms of hwa-byung are a pervasive depressive mood, regret or guilt, anxiety, anger, destructive impulses, "weak and sensitive mind," obsession-compulsion, irritability, paranoid feelings, and hypochondriasis."

Have you met any people suffering from Hwa byeong?
What percentage of the population suffers from Hwa byeong?
Does Hwa byeong explain some "Korean behaviour"?

It's nice to see that you take so much time out of your busy day to give back to yours.

This disorder seems to be simply stress.

Be careful of the health industry making up stuff to legitimise itself.

actually those descriptions do describe some of the rabid anti korean posters here.

i don't lose my composure here if you notice. but it does seem like some posters here like to think about me all day and foam at the mouth. kind of amusing.

Who are the new Korean trolls. I checked Dave's during my lunch break and there's all these names I've never seen before. And they're all making posts in broken English. And all their posts are defending Korea... whether or not someone is actually saying something bad about Korea.

I thought Dave's was for, you know, people who teach English, or at least expats living in the country.

I can't help it though. Why just last night I informed my fiancee of my feelings of a poster on Dave's but did not want to act on it since he lives in Los Angeles. Oh Lord, please give me the strength to keep JAD out of my mind. JAD, why are you such a fine specimen of a human being? How do you do it?
