I was in a restaurant, waiting for my food, when a Korean couple came in and sat down. The ajumma went to their table to give them side-dishes when the young man gestured towards me and said, in Korean, "He was here first." The ajumma said that my dish had special side-dishes which were being cooked, which was true.
Anyway, the fact that he did that really made my day. Young people in Korea give me hope. |

I had a similar thing happen to me. I was standing in line at a McDonalds for my monthly burger fix. I had already ordered and was standing off to the side waiting for it to come up, I hate sitting down and them having to bring it to me.
Suddenly it gets very busy and a crowd of about 6 or 8 groups come in almost simultaneously. Most didn't even notice me standing there, but one girl did and assumed that I hadn't ordered. When the worker came to get he order from her, she motioned for me to go first. How nice of her! She seemed a bit surprised when I told her that I had already ordered, but thank you very much.

Going home on Saturday stood in a longish Everland bus queue. Bus pulls up and people start trying to cut in. One lady munching on her hotdog just stepped in front of a guy and stood there. Guy told her to piss off to the back.
Couple stood behind me then tried to sneak past me and the next family. I don't really give a shit I'll stand or sit. Family went farking mental and screamed at them to go to the back. I let them back in behind me,
First bus pulls up lets 20 people on and then ran away leaving us at the side.
Next bus turns up an hour later. By this time there is a queue of maybe a hundred or so people. inc a guide dog and blind bloke.
Bus stops about ten meters down the road at the end of the queue. They stand there and look at it. We all run to the bus door. and old lady and kids shoulder check a young girl from nowhere and knock her on her arse. People shout at the old lady she just keeps going.
Get on the bus and the bus driver is trying to watch the back door to make sure people don't get on. As the last people get off a load get on and he runs down the bus cracks one old woman across the chops, throws her off grabs a young girl throws her out of the bus (physicall lobs her out.) grabs and old woman who throws money in his face and starts screaming at him. He then kicks another girl up the arse and of the bus.
People are now pouring on the front of the bus some paying some not. He pushes one man onto his arse and starts dragging him to the front of the bus whilst trying to grab a young couple in front of them.
Kicks about 20 people off lets another ten on then has a blazing row with all these people outside.
I loved every minute of it. |

I was on the train. Got up to go to the bathroom, and have to wait my turn. A youngish mother and her daughter are also waiting. The little girl, maybe 7, starts staring at me. I notice. The mother notices. She tells the little girl to stop staring. It isn't polite.
It was all I could do to keep from throwing myself at the mother's feet and kissing them. There is hope. |

I have noticed that the under 30 set don't like to pander to the ajumma/ ajushi's senses of cultural entitlement.
At least, clerks I've seen under 30 will always tell them to wait their turn when they cut in line. |

| I've met some pretty cool strangers here. Went to a bar and saw some tough-looking Korean dudes. They left the bar, then came back and walked over to our table. Turns out that they went out and bought a crap-load of ice cream for us. Those Jaws ice cream bars are pretty good. |

Just relax will you? Can't you just let one possibly hopeful thing past? |

Same here. For all the horror stories I see on Dave's and see played out in public by the older Koreans, my students give me hope that Korea is getting better. |

| Hehe... all these stories seem so laughable to me now, after just getting back from Vancouver, Canada. People are so much more polite in public in Canada than they are here. Perhaps... too polite... |
