I watch MBC (when it shuts down) and EBC (when it starts up, I love watching the aerobics first thing) and the Korean national anthem is a pretty nice little tune.

Most national anthems are pretty good apart from 'God save the Queen'
('and burn her with gasoline' is the second verse if you live in Wales) which must be the wost dirge in the world followed by the Argentine anthem which is nearly as bigger dirge as God Save the Queen.

The history behind it is really interesting. The man who created the anthem did so while in exile in Spain. Once independence took hold, the song was used as the anthem. The man stayed on this small island off the coast of Spain, married a Spanish woman and had children. He continued composing and conducting until his death.

Now what gets interesting is that the Korean national anthem was until maybe 2 years ago owned by the family of the composer. That meant that every time it was played, the family got a royalty check out of it. Eventually that made the news, the shit hit the fan and after many bitter words, the family donated the song to the Korean people....

Crazy stuff, huh?

I may be wrong on a few points though....

I'll swap "God Save the Queen" for "O Canada" any day. It's dull as dishwater. Korea's anthem is quite pretty, but I favour the French anthem "La Marseillaises." It's rousing, beautiful and vicious!

(I tried to format this to separate English and French (as any good Canadian would do) but to no avail.)

Quote:
Allons enfants de la Patrie Arise, children of the fatherland
Le jour de gloire est arriv ! The day of glory has arrived!
Contre nous de la tyrannie Against us, the tyranny's
L'tendard sanglant est lev. (bis) Bloody banner is raised. (repeat)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes Do you hear in the fields
Mugir ces froces soldats ? The howling of these savage soldiers?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras They are coming into your midst
gorger vos fils et vos compagnes ! To cut the throats of your sons, your wives!

Aux armes, citoyens ! To arms, citizens!
Formez vos bataillons ! Form your battalions!
Marchons, marchons ! Let us march, let us march!
Qu'un sang impur May tainted blood
Abreuve nos sillons ! Water our fields!

I don't know any anthems aside from the "Star Spangled Banner". I don't even know anything past the first verse. That's because I'm American!

If you have some time, browse this site with over 400 anthems.

San Marino's national anthem strikes me as not being that far off of a musically-incompetent person practicing the scales badly.

Here are the lyrics to the South Korean national anthem in Latin alphabet, Hangeul, and in English translation.

According to Geography of Thought by Richard Nisbett,
Asians are not as prone to see controversy as are Westerners.
That is why Buddhists and Christians do not argue with each other, as they would in our society.
That is why the religiously committed and the religiously uncommitted do not argue with each other, as they do in our society.
That is why the religiously uncommitted do not raise Cain over the second line of the national anthem reading "May God preserve our land for ten thousand years," as they would in our society.

The Korean national anthem was written by a Korean who married a foreigner and lived abroad. One should have that printed in Korean on little cards. Hand it out next time some ajusshi starts up with your GF for betraying Korea.
