I just happened to make small talk with a Korean adjumah the other day, and was shocked when she told me this. She knew enough English to make sense at least when she spoke to me. Her body language was right too. Showed a comfort when talking to a westerner ( if only slightly).
She said she spent most of her time in Korea town, so I guess there wasn't the need to communicate in English. I asked her why she came back to Korea, and she said she missed her chidren. She also returns to Atlanta every year to see her husband, and probably also renew her green card (keep it valid).
I get the feeling that only Koreans can live in a foreigen country and not aclimatise themselves to their new found home. The Chinese do, as also do the Japanese. Met tons of Chinese and Japanese and other Asian peoples who have become members of their new found home in every way possible. |

countless in the 10+ catagory too..
its not hard to do, you live in a bubble and the winter rolls around again
before you know it 5 years just past you by..
I have met plenty of immigrant kids in school who speak English perfectly cause they were born here, met their parents and they cant even carry a conversation without using their kids as translators.. and they have been here 30+ years... how do they survive? simple! plenty of people just like them who live in the area... they all live in the bubble together..
welcome to ITAEWON hahahahaha |

You ever been to Atlanta, man? Because I knew lots of immigrants in Atlanta who never learned English. The Chinese and Japanese fit right in my ass. Please.
And I bet she lived in Little Chambodia (Ch said like S). That's near Chamblee Dunwoody road, by Buford Highway. |

Obviously, the OP has never been to Koreatown in ATL. What more could you ask for? I mean, why leave?
5 years here is like 35 doggie years... |

most ironic post ever!
Hey buddy....have you not met any foreigners in Korea?
A:"Yeah...you know....there's basically no point in learning any Korean whatsoever....I mean....it's only useful in Korea and L.A."
B: "So how long have you been in Korea?"
A: "Coming up on ten years now" |

Yeah, sorry OP. I mean, 8 years is a long time, but there are plenty of Westerners in Korea who barely speak Korean. I've been here a year and a half and still suck at Korean. Itaewonguy is right. If you wanna live in a bubble, you can. |

I was wondering about that, too.
What a rather odd and fairly minging thing to say. |

Huh? Last I heard, the thing does't expire after the bearer is determined to be a permanent immigrant. Do you have any governmental information to the contrary? |

You do realize that they're making fun of your inability to use punctuation, right?
Seoulsucker's opinion is worth my time my ass. = gibberish sentence
Seoulsucker's opinion is worth my time, my ass. = English
You're an English teacher here, right Ata? |

Maybe he can teach my ass to speak English. Now that would be impressive. Come to think of it, my ass actually does blend consonants better than most of my students.

Are the Koreans the only ones? Heavens no.
I grew up in Southern California. I knew 3rd generation Mexican families who spoke no English... |

You are comparing apples and oranges. Most of us are in Korea, not because of a trade, but because of simply English being our native tongue. If one was planning on having a Career as something other than an English Teacher, I am sure they study and gain a good grasp of Korea (I think these are definitely a minority).

I think this is a bogus conclusion. There are plenty of Chinese and Japanese who live in a closed-off world, especially those who move over in their middle-age. |
