Quote:
Members of the group The Foo Fighters provided music for a soundtrack of the recent documentary, The Other Side of AIDS, which questions whether HIV is the cause of AIDS. The band has spread its message that HIV does not cause AIDS at concerts, and it lists the HIV denial group Alive and Well as a worthy cause on its Web site...

The band's own site links to a group called "Alive & Well".

http://www.aliveandwell.org/

A&W states up front:

Quote:
There is no proof that HIV causes AIDS. In fact, all the epidemiological and microbiological evidence taken together conclusively demonstrates that HIV cannot cause AIDS or any other illness. The concept that AIDS is caused by a virus is not a fact, but a belief that was introduced at a 1984 press conference by Dr. Robert Gallo, a researcher employed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). (14)

Wow that's weird because all the epidemiological studies categorically back the vast scientific consensus view that HIV causes AIDS.

Quote:
HIV is a retrovirus, a type of virus studied meticulously during two decades of federal health programs that centered around the search for a cancer virus. The idea of contagious cancer was a popular notion in the 1960s and 70s.

And this idea is still here. HPV is an example of a virus that causes cancer. Cancers happen when the DNA gets mutated. Viruses can do that, along with radiation and certain chemicals. That's not to say all cancers are caused by a virus.

Quote:
However, healthy people live in harmony with an uncountable number of harmless retroviruses;

Okay. But many are not.

Quote:
some are infectious while others are endogenous, produced by our own DNA. (15)

Ummm. That's 100% wrong. An endogenous retrovirus is a retrovirus that has got into a germ line cell and a mutation has knocked them out. Our DNA does not produce them other than copying the string of DNA code that these retroviruses used to be. They're now just part of our genetic code.

Quote:
Few, if any, retroviruses have been shown to cause disease in humans.

They really got to define "few". Few is still not "none".

Quote:
HIV is the only virus that is said to cause a group of diseases caused by other viruses and bacteria rather than causing its own disease.

Well it attacks the white blood cells. That's a disease right there. Diseases don't have to kill you to be a disease. Having no functioning white blood cells won't kill you. Just don't get a cold...

Geez, even on their intro page they got a lot of crap wrong and simply make up a bunch of other crap.

Oh, Foo Fighters, you've cast your lot in with an odd, odd group.

No, ddung. I was rather surprised. I realize people have a problem with drug companies and arguably HIV drugs are expensive... but this is going the wrong way.

They're splitting hairs in a very bullsh*tty way.

A body/immune system weakened by HIV remaining untreated is left open to developing fully-blown AIDS and very particular kinds of opportunistic diseases: Kaposi's sarcoma etc.

It's just a theory. Theories can be tested. Nothing wrong with postulating theories. Unless you hate science.

You know something is wrong with a culture when they ignore the doctors and turn to the Foo Fighters for important sounding medical questions.

The only problem is if people decide they don't have AIDS based on some crackpot web page where they're not actually testing an alternative hypothesis, then people die. In short, if one has an alternative hypothesis, do the research. That guy in Australia had an alternative hypothesis about ulcers. He didn't put up web pages decrying a conspiracy of the government, drug companies, and Harvard medical school. He just did the basic science. And won a Nobel for it. If a person doesn't think HIV causes AIDS, they are free to stick themselves with a needle full of HIV tainted blood and show us you don't develop full blown AIDS. Pretty simple.

Mindmetoo is correct. Theories like this encourge people to believe that hiv isn't a big deal (because it apperently doesn't cause aids). People who believe this are less likely to be tested for hiv and also less likey to use HAART treatment if they do have it. Hiv isn't cureable, it may never be but it is becoming more treatable. People with the virus are living much longer lives as a result of haart and other new treatments. If hiv doesn't cause aids then why are people with hiv virtually the only people who get Kaposi's Sarcoma, Cytomeglovirus, Toxoplasmosis ect... Which normally healthy people almost never get or are able to fight off easily?

There is nothing wrong with supporting people living with hiv, in fact I think its great. But I think that the group here is maybe trying to lessen the stigma of people living with hiv and taking it too far.

Well, Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain and the Foo Fighters were never even half as good as Nirvana, and she probably has HIV. Dave Grohl was probably in on the murder and is now trying to cover up the fact that she has HIV.

I'm tempted to say that nobody in their right mind believes this, but that would be obviously wrong. i don't really understand the agenda in this. But, to be fair, it is somewhat accurate. HIV weakens your immune system, and when it is weaked to a certain point, it is called AIDS. But really, you don't die of AIDS, you die of some other complications. I believe, on death certificates of AIDS deaths, it says, .... died of complications related to AIDS. It doesn't state AIDS was the exact cause of death.
In practical terms you died because of AIDS, but something else actually killed you.

The Foo Fighters aren't the only ones and their views are advanced when compared to those of Jacob Zuma, the ex-Deputy President of South Africa:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4879822.stm

"South African ex-Deputy President Jacob Zuma said he showered after sex with an HIV-positive woman, thinking this would reduce his risk of being infected.

... Before being sacked as deputy president last year, Mr Zuma headed the government's National Aids Council and the Moral Regeneration Campaign."

I lived and worked in Mozambique for 8 month at a teacher's training school/health center. One of the main goals of the project was to promote AIDS awareness. One day, when discussing AIDS and how it affects us personally, one of the more senior advocates explained that her uncle died of AIDS recently because he shared a toothbrush with an HIV+ person. Shocked

This was somebody who was a key AIDS awareness activist in the area.
