Iran expanding its Atom program, UN reports

But a Nobel Peace Prize winner also cautions:

Quote:
"This is the first time Iran is ready to discuss all the outstanding issues which triggered the crisis in confidence," Mohamed ElBaradei, the nuclear agency's director general, said in an hourlong interview. "It's a significant step. There are clear deadlines, so it's not, as some people are saying, an open-ended invitation to dallying with the agency or a ruse to prolong negotiations and avoid sanctions."

"I'm clear at this stage, you need to give Iran a chance to prove its stated good will," adding, "Sanctions alone, I know for sure, are not going to lead to a durable solution."

I repeat. The UN says Iran is operating 2,000 centrifuges. But ElBaradei tells us we need to give Iran a chance to prove its good will.

Indeed. I am also not satisfied that the W. Bush Administration has acted in good-faith and exhausted all diplomatic alternatives as Baker and Hamilton et al. suggested last year in their report -- namely, holding serious, substantive talks with Tehran, taking at least some of their interests into consideration and negotiating with them on as many issues as we can, enemy or not. (Reagan tried and failed miserably, mostly because Tehran did not negotiate in good-faith. But that was then and this is now.)

This being said, there may indeed come a time when we act against the Iranian govt. Their nuclear ambitions are fundamentally incompatible with our own interests in that part of the world, as well as many of our regional friends' interests, for that matter. In fact, I am not certain who would benefit from a nuclear-armed Tehran apart from Tehran and its own Fundamentalist-derived, regional-hegemonic-oriented interests.

The Middle East just got a little more dangerous.
