I've had it before in a sundubu place and it was basically hamburger meat on a hot plate. Pretty crap and not at all like normal galbi.

my understanding of LA Galbi when served in korea, is short ribs with individual bones left in them. so you can kind of pick them up and eat em with your fingers - rather than how you usually wrap it up in a leaf with samjang.

a lot of us restaurants serve galbi that way, so ig uess thats the name they gave it in korea (LA Galbi)

I was told LA galbi is top of the line galbi, LA having more cachet than, say, Mokpo.

It's just an expensive kind of beef galbi.

What I'm interested in is how it got it's name?

I just got off the phone with a Korean who tried to explain it to me and I am still confused because he says it is a cheaper than Korean beef. He said it is a special cut and also cooked or served with a different kind of sauce. He also said that i-dong kalbi and LA ( for Los Angeles , California) originated in the Uijongbu area. I had LA Kalbi there several years ago. ( and passed by a lot of budei chiggae restaurants)

see the bones in the middle of most pieces? you pick it up and eat it off the bone, kinda like american ribs.

everytime i've had galbi in southern california, it's looked like this. so yes, LA = Los Angeles Galbi

Being from San Diego, what you just said and pictured is exactly what we were expecting to eat during our year in Korea.

LA Galbi sucks. It's on the plate and cools down. I want that s*it hot on the grill. I don't care if I have to cook it myself.

The only difference is the way its cut.

LA galbi has many smaller and slimmer bones, kinda looks like a train. The galbi you see here have 1 longer bone attached to a slab of meat.
