I am flying to Japan from Korea tomorrow, and will be flying back from Korea to Japan in about two weeks, then to the US.
I've never had a problem with overweight baggage in my life. But now looking at the ANA (All Nippon Airways) website it says that for Economy class flights within Asia or to Europe one can only bring 44 pounds (20 kg) worth. That's almost nothing! I was planning on having two bags, one heavier and one lighter. I don't have time to mail anything now, and there is no way I'll be within 20 kg for two bags.
Have people flown from Incheon to Japan on Japanese airlines and had this problem before? If so how much were you charged on the Korean side (Korea to Japan)?
Crap. |

I'd call your travel agent or the airline itself and ask them directly. Ask for the total baggage allowance (total weight & total number of items), and have them break that down into checked and carry-on. 20kg? That just looks to restrictive to me to be total allowance. Maybe that's just checked luggage? |

I'm not American or Canadian and that sounds normal to me. 20kg is the limit for most places - think it's only 40kg for flights in and out of North Am. |

Well, ANA's website says 20kg for checked bags and 10kg for carry on. My checked bag is going to be well over 20kg. The problem is that I flew from the U.S. to Korea and the allowance is greater. I don't have any more stuff going home than I did coming here but I am making this short trip to Japan and have to take my stuff with me. Is there any way around this?? I believe that I will be so over 20kg on my checked bag (more like 30kg) that I couldn't even begin to afford to pay the excess fee. I have already thrown out as many books and clothes as I could, and I'm sure it's still too heavy...
And I don't even have a scale in my house to measure.
Dammit, I wish I had known this sooner. I'm really stressing out. I just can't get rid of anything else.
So, in the Incheon airport is there:
1) Affordable storage lockers (where I could store heavy things for 10 days until I pass back through Incheon after Japan)? Unfortunately, I won't have enough time after coming back from Japan before I depart for the U.S. to leave my stuff anywhere besides the airport.
2) A post office in the airport that would be open on a Sunday, so I can send some things directly (even book rate)?
I can't even figure out WHY my bags are so heavy. I don't have that many books or that many clothes. It just all adds up. |

just flew on air canada (which sucks btw) and each seat had two checked bags maximum 23kg and one carry on - can't remember the weight restriction.
The weight allowance just went down this summer, previously it was 35kg. |

Standard weight allowances for ALL FLIGHTS not going to/from North America are limited to 20kg PER PAID TICKET in economy class.
This is the same in Asia, Europe, Oceania, Africa, everywhere.
Note to the OP: I think (and it is NOT certain) that there is a storage area at Incheon along the back wall, before you go through security, and IF I AM NOT mistaken it is behind check-in counter "M". |

Why not just pay the fee for being over the weight limit on one bag? It's only like 25 bucks. That's what I did. |

I think the charge is per kilo not a straight charge for an unlimited amount of weight. |

Fee for an extra bag on Northwest Airlines was close to $100, last I checked.
I spoke with an employee about this, and other issues recently. It seems that the airlines are attempting to run the airlines without people, and have cut staff back as much as possible. You now do much of your check-in via machines.
They also want to cut down on the number/weight of bags they have to deal with, or make a profit off of them.
Personally, I wish the USA wouldn't help these airlines out with tax breaks and whatnot. I'd like to see Northwest and a few others go under. The problem is that their employees make far too much money. They need to go out of business so other airlines can (and they certainly will) spring up to fill the void at lower costs all-around. |

$130. Worth it for me. Since there is no surface mail from the US, it's going to cost a whole lot more than that to send 50 lb. by mail. |

I would complain to much, coming from the UK you only get 20kg if its short or long haul, you cannucks and yanks get it easy, pay the money and spare a thought for us brits who get shafted (and to think, once upon a time we ruled most of the world until we were made to give it back!)
later haters! |

I paid about $50 US penalty for a 30 kg suitcase (checked) from Japan to Korea on ANA two years ago. |

I recenty ran into problems with baggage allowance at Incheon when I transferred from one airline to another and found out that they had different baggage allowances. I was charged 113,000 won for 15 kg of excess baggage. |

There is storage at Incheon. If you're facing the check-in counters from any of the main doors, head all the way to the right. There's a small area where you can put your stuff into a box, seal it, and get a reciept. Something like $4.00 a day? Not too cheap, but probably easier than hauling all that stuff around. |

I flew thai from LA to thailand the weight was like 44 kilos!
then from thai to korea was 20 kilos!
im like HUH????
lucky for me I have silver status so I get another 10 kilos.. but still how do they expect you to fit into the weight regulations when one part of the trip is 20 kilos lless weight! I didnt check my bags through as I stopped in thailand for 2 days.. but still.. weird!!
best thing is to get a big carry on and put all the heavy things in it..
thats what I do... the carry on is never weighed! just make sure the size is correct..
but yeah excess bagagge is expensive! they do this on purpose so they can make more money!! its funny how they say for your SAFETY we can allow you to carry more that 20 kilos!! for saftey regulations.. sorry sir!!
but if you pay 400 dollars you can carry that extra 50 kilo bag ? HUH??? |
