How much overtime is acceptable in public school? I have just begun a position in a public school and have been asked to do overtime each week, which I am fine with, but I would like to know how much is normal...
...what are the average hours of overtime you do in your public school per week? |

Regular classes (ie 3-6th grade) amount to 26 hours, so that's 4 hrs of OT a week. Then I teach after school classes twice a week, 4 more hours. So I get 8 hrs of OT a week. But if there are canceled classes, they start claiming my OT isn't OT... |

That sounds about right then...I have been asked to do 4 hours per week o/t after school classes, if they start asking for alot more I will try to put my foot down I reckon...
...probably a fine line between standing up for yourself and offending the Principal! |

Indeed there is. Unless it's creating a serious inconvenience in your life I'd suggest you plug ahead with it, especially if the extrta money's good. Almost no new Korean teacher would dare object, and so if you do, it will make you look like quite the whiner. |

If you teach for GEPIK there is usually in the contract a humber of hours that you must teach if asked ... and over that it is up to you. In my contract that amount is 28 hours (=28 classes) total - so up to 6 hours (=6 classes) of overtime.
If you check your contract you may find a similar clause ... That will tell you what you must do and what you have a choice about ...
I don't have any overtime at the moment ... But I would be very happy to do some .... The extra money would be nice ... And all it would really do is to reduce the "free" time that I have at school ... And I do have free time over and above the lesson preparation that I do ...

28 hours total, 6 hours overtime for me.
I asked for 30, but they didn't seem comfortable giving me that much. |

If it's between 9-5, do as much as you can do, but refuse to teach normal classes in excess of 22. Make sure everything over 22 is extra-curricular and make sure you're getting minimum 30,000 per class. Don't be a sucker; you can get 50,000 to 60,000 per class doing privates, so why work for peanuts at your real job? |

I wouldn't find more than 22 normal classes a problem ... because that usually means teaching the same lesson again ... So really is not in itself a problem ... or teaching a lesson prepared by someone else ... In contrast the extra-curricular lessons usually do need planning usually by the person who is teaching them ... So do mean more work ... But I would personally not mind either ... But I would not rule out "normal classes" over 22 ... The requirement to pay overtime does not mean it cannot be paid for "normal" classes ...
I do agree though that you should be paid for teaching more than the 22 lessons ....

I guess I agree. But usually the schools want to pay 20,000 per class when you're over 22, whereas if students are paying money it's easier to get 30,000 to 40,000.
What I find really annoying is when a school can't give you 22 regular curriculum hours, and then they try to prop up the schedule with extra-curricular classes students pay for, but the school wants to not pay you. If students pay, I get paid. |

I sometimes work till 5.40 to do overtime but this counts as two hours overtime. Hence 40.000W an hour, which is a fair rate. I split it as an hour vacation and an hours pay.
Don't be afraid to say no to your boss. Just because Koreans do something it doesn't mean you have to. Your boss will ultimately respect you and value you. I said no to 28 hours a week but agreed to do a summer camp. Now i've agreed to 24 hours. Too many hours means a tired teacher, which isn't good for anyone.
An afterschool programme makes the school look really good. I get paraded around alot though, so beware. |
