I got a real taste for Manu Chao when I was hanging out with a Chilean in China. He sings in Spanish, French, English and possibly other languages. These were a couple of my favourites:

Clandestino

Bongo Bong je ne t'aime plus

There's so much fantastic French pop music I've heard over the years, but for some reason I can't recall any titles of the top off my head. It must be 7 years really since I listened to any, I suppose because French music hasn't taken off in China and SK, so there's no opportunity to hear it. Confused

Thanks for that BK! I've heard that so many times and absolutely loved it, but I didn't know its title.

haha! Is that you singing in your bedroom, twg? Wink

Here is a classic French rock number from the band Trust (from when they were young and hot): Anti-Social

If you want to understand what they're singing about then watch this cover of it by the American band Anthrax: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-t0affoV5rI&mode=related&search=

However, I think it totally lost its bite in their cover of it.

Etienne Daho was a good French pop star in the 80's & 90's. I liked "Paris le Flore" & "Saudade". Rita Mitsouko with "C'est Comme Ca" was another I liked.

I absolutely love this song, but I could not find a high quality audio version. This is the best I could do - it's still pleasant but you'll miss some of the nuance. This is by a famous Algerian artist named Cheb Khaled and is sung in part Arabic and part French. Much much better than this are some of his live versions, where the musicians have more leeway. However, I could not find a decent live clip either. It's an ode to a girl called Aicha ((pronounced eye-ee-sha). love the blend of Western pop and traditional Arabic sounds. My favourite bit is the passionate part where he's declaring his love in French but singing in a traditinal Arabic style - absolutely smashing! It's a shame if this is the first time you hear it, from this youtube clip. You really need to hear it on a quality stereo, and listen to it rather than watch it. Close your eyes and soak it up: Aicha - Cheb Khaled

And here is cover of it by a Danish band Outlandish, sung in English. The quality is a bit better. It sounds quite different, not so Arabic, and has a very American feel about it. I have to say these lads have done a smashing job! Aicha by Outlandish
