Since the topic is coming up in my HS textbooks and I love doing pop-songs with my students I thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions. I can be a bit pop-music challenged at times. Thanks in advance for any help.

I like the BEP suggestion.

An older tune that has worked for my uni classes is "Everyday People" by Sly and the Family Stone.

For gender, perhaps "Women are doin' it for themselves" Annie Lennox and Aretha? Not my favorite, but hey, I haven't had coffee yet.

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas. They might even recognise the BEPs song. Or, I could do Lennox's 'Sistas are Doing it for Themselves' and then follow it up with her 'Baby's Comin' Back' to show how well all that feminist theory actually plays out in real-life.

The first song I thought of was Black or White by Michael Jackson. The video is pretty cool (at least it was when I first saw it back in the 90s minus that really weird crotchgrabbing windshield busting part)...I'm sure there are a ton more but I just can't think of any!

Gloria Gayner, "I will survive". I have the video on my site or can send, with nice big words/text. Also karaoke.

Students might be familiar with the popular Korean version which translates to "I'm okay"...

Hurricane by Bob Dylan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_(song)

Hurricane by Black Thought ,Common, Roots crew
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_(hip_hop_song)

The bob dylan version contains "n" word
And I am sure the hip hop version might be a little strong as well
But both are great songs about racial inequality.

There's always John Lennon's Woman in the N*gger of the World. But there's that word, which makes it unteachable in context. Perhaps overly polemical, and musically not his best. Still a song that could be used in a bunch of places, including here:

Woman is the n*gger of the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the n*gger of the world
Think about it...do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance
If she wont be a slave, we say that she don't love us
If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man
While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us

Woman is the n*gger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave of the slaves
Ah, yeah...better scream about it

We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that shes too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah...alright...hit it!

We insult her every day on tv
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When shes young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is...if you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream about it

We make her paint her face and dance (x6)

On a more positive note, from the same album is Yoko Ono's We're All Water, which is actually one of her better songs. Okay, so the names referenced are dated - replace them. Still, the original first verse is a hoot. And the chorus is actually just what you want. Wouldn't a Jaurim cover of this be so cool?

There may not be much difference
Between Chairman Mao and Richard Nixon
If we strip them naked

There may not be much difference
Between Marilyn Monroe and Lenny Bruce
If we check their coffins

There may not be much difference
Between White House and Hall of People
If we count their windows

There may not be much difference
Between Raquel Welch and Jerry Rubin
If we hear their heartbeat

We're all water from different rivers
That's why it's so easy to meet
We're all water in this vast, vast ocean
Someday we'll evaporate together

There may not be much difference
Between Eldrige Cleaver and Queen of England
If we bottle their tears

There may not be much difference
Between Manson and the Pope
If we press their smile

There may not be much difference
Between Rockefeller and you
If we hear you sing

There may not be much difference
Between you and me
If we show our dreams

We're all water from different rivers
That's why it's so easy to meet
We're all water in this vast, vast ocean
Someday we'll evaporate together

What's the difference?
What's the difference?

There's no difference!
There's no difference!
What's the difference?

A bunch of Phil Ochs' civil rights tunes, like Here's to the State of Mississippi (written in one night in anger of the acquittals in the Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner murders) or Too Many Martyrs (about the killing of Medgar Evers) would probably be too dated for your students to get outside of a unit on the movement in the US.

Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People

Good for a cloze and singing as it's clear and easy lyrics.
