Howdy All,

i will be arriving in South Korea to teach English at a public school this August. i have accepted a position in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do Province, and i am curious if any of you have ever visited or lived/taught there.

for any of you that may have lived there, is there a gym in the city? nothing fancy: just a weight bench and some weights will do.

thanks for any help.

paul

I visited there. Seemed like a nice place to "visit". I don't know if I would want to live there though. The city is about 450,000 people I think. There will be gyms everywhere, this isn't the 3rd world.

I lived for for six months. I found it a nice place to live. It's very developed and has everything, big department stores, a decent night life and yes gyms. It's right on the sea so there are a few decent beaches. I had a scooter there and made going around easy and the country side is really close with nice bike rides.

You should enjoy it. Someone there organizes a foreigner mailing list, so you will be able to meet people to go out with.

Enjoy your time.

O.P.

Do you know which school you will be at?

There are some foreigners here, and they do gather. Some say they are clickey...clickish..cliquish...(can't spell), but you'll make up your own mind.

There are things to do, place to go, and a couple of good stores.

Where will you be teaching at?

Been there a few times. It's all right, and I may be moving there in August as well. It's scenic, and there's a few places to shop. Yeah, a fair number of the white people there really suck, but they'll probably be gone after this semester. And you'll have no problem finding a gym.

I'm off to Yeosu too in a month or so. I've already contacted Korean bikers in Yeosu but I'm curious if there are any expat mountain bikers in Yeosu too. How about hiking? Yongchui mountain looks good.

Cheers,

Duncan

There are mountains all over the place in Jeollanam-do. The Korea on the Rocks website has a few write ups of stuff in Jeollanam-do, and there are a few entries about Yeosu here: http://www.koreaontherocks.com/climbing/areas.php?area_province=8

A few of the more notable hiking (not necessarily mountain climbing) places in Jeollanam-do are Jogyesan (next door in Suncheon), Jirisan (the 2nd highest mountain in Korea, next door in Gurye), Wolchulsan, and Mudeungsan (in Gwangju). For some profiles, see: http://wiki.galbijim.com/Hiking_in_Jeollanam-do

well did she/he come or not? I met someone new tonight, but theres a few changes this month, so can never be sure.

Well I am sure that we won't have you working in the salt mines, but if you find yourself there, then ask any questions you need to know about how many pounds of salt need to be carried. Why isn't there a cat of nine tails? Do we all have to watch ariang for punishment?
