My current PC is fine for what I use it for, but I am always looking to upgrade my technology. Can anyone that keeps up with the latest "goodies" give me an idea of what to expect to be able to build for around 1.0 million krw in Yongsan? That is only for the PC. I'm keeping my monitor. I'm not an idiot and do quite well there haggling prices; I just honestly don't know what the latest technology is. Thanks!

well, not to be rude or anything, but I don't think 1 million qualifies as high-end.. well, I mean, when I bought mine it was a lot more.. guess it just depends what you want, though..

~800k will get you into a q6600 (quadcore) with 500gig HDD, 4 gigs RAM, GT7600 video, DVD burner.

With the extra 200k you can add more HDD space (bigger or more drives) or bump up / upgrade the video to an Nvida GT8800 (or equivalent).

Thanks! I was hoping that you would respond. I just priced some systems with those specs on Danawa and came up with similar numbers.

"I'm no newb, I've been here three months"
I remember that comment and get a laugh every time that I see it.

It's not rude to be truthful, but we all don't pay top dollar when we can pay less for the same thing.

If you want best of the best, you've got to get DDR3 RAM which is running about $250 per for 1GB. That's what I'll be buying for my rig next year after the price comes down.

I know it's always true, but right now is a bad time to buy. Penryn and the new AMDs will be out later this year and the DDR3 RAM will come down soon. This will also bring the price down on the current stuff.

If I were to build today, this would be the rig I'd get (prices are rough estimates):

MB: ASUS P5K - $230
CPU: Intel 6850 - $220
RAM: OCZ PC6400 2GB - $100
HDD1: Raptor 150GB - $200
HDD2: 2 x Seagate 500 - $250
ODD: 2 x DVD RW SATA - $75
VGA: XFX 8800 GTS 320 - $300
Case: Antec P180 - $150 (I got one for free from a buddy)
PSU: Ultra X3 800w Modular - $150
Fans / Cables - Ultra Kit - $75
OS: XP Pro OEM - $140

TOTAL: $1,990

Don't forget to get a good case and power supply, if you're doing a top-of-the-line system, you need good circulation/cooling in the case, and solid power so nothing gets fried.

Obviously you could drop the hard drives a bit, get a cheaper case and make a few other changes. But if you want top of the line, spend the money and don't skimp on it.

Very Happy maybe I should have said medium end. I'm not a 'gamer', so I don't need the high end of the spectrum.

That PC your trying to sell in the "For Sale" section is a nice, if a little dated, medium-end PC that should work great for a non-gamer. Why don't you just use that? The next step up won't do much for you in the basic apps and internet-surfing department. Anything more would just be superfluous.

Haha! Yeah, you are right. I've pretty much come to that conclusion myself. I just started to get bored during the holiday, and felt like I needed a new project. Good advice!

Thanks to all for advice. Built a machine that registers a 5.8 out of 6.0 on Vista, and I paid way far less than some of the recommendations.
