Again it happened today. I was out and about caring about nothing and was approached by a drunken ajossi. He yelled hello at me and immediately went in for the kill and asked where I lived. Since I'm not used to Koreans immediately asking the whereabouts of my domicile I had to have him repeat it a few times. Figuring it out I replied Hyehwa. With that he smiled and muttered "I know" in Korean. Then he reached out to shake hands and...GAVE ME THE WIGGLY FINGER!

This is the second time recently this has happened to me. I've always been under the impression that the wiggly finger is a signal from one gay man to another that they are interested. The wiggle simulates the motion of milking the prostate. So, are all ajossis drunks looking to pick up hot studs or something? Cuz, good God, that leathery skin and musk of cigarettes and ginseng is way too overwhelming for me to think about getting near them, let alone touch them.

Or does it mean something else, something much more sinister?

Really I would like to know, am I being hit on by drunken ajossis or does the wiggly finger mean something else that I'm unaware of?

Ah, the homo-erotic wiggly finger. I feel violated by it every time it happens.

never had or heard of the wiggly finger. have had some lower class ajossi shake my hand before, then want to shake again so he could grip my hand to see who was stronger. that seemed like it might be a trend here as well.

Yeah, I've got the wiggly finger here as well. A few years ago I used to see a chicken delivery man on an almost daily basis. We started out nodding to one another then it progressed to saying "hello" and then finally he started shaking my hand. It got to be kind of annoying as he would stop driving just so he could shake my hand. One day he slipped in the wiggly finger and chuckled. I did my best to avoid him after that.

I checked this out with my adult male students tonight. The first guy reacted strongly and almost shouted, "Homo!" When he explained to the others, they agreed that that can be true, but it is also used as a kind of joking/friendly gesture among friends to show affection, but at heart it is a gay signal.

Inadvertantly, I made a date for later tonight with one of the guys. Confused

Met a drunk guy on the subway the other night who had a much more direct approach. He asked me in a loud voice---on the somewhat crowded train--- if I was homosexual. Not believing what I was hearing, I asked him to repeat it. He leaned in and attempted to kiss me. I made a finger-cross and said "anya"! His friend restrained him.

I would have preferred getting the wiggily finger actually.
