Seeing as I am moving toward marriage, please answer some question about what rights the F2 gives me, and perhaps help me clear up some misconceptions.

1. Does an F2 = the ability to teach privates legally?

2. Would I be able to come and go from any job at my leisure? Am I still bound to contracts in the same way as with an E2?

3. Will I still have to get an ARC card every year?

4. Will my tax status change? I'm curious about this, because if she gets the promotion she expects in a year or so, then between us, we'll be grossing money that puts us out of the max range for US expatriate tax exemption. Will they consider our income as combined, even if she is married to me, but not yet a citizen?

Any other information about the F2 you are willing to add would be greatly appreciated.

There are multiple threads in the FAQ on the subject of F-2-1 visa's. However, immigration seem to change their rules on a yearly basis so those up-to-date and in-the-know could add new info here.

To teach private lesson legally you must register with your local board of education. Your Visa status doesn't absolve you of this.

You are bound to a contract as much as anyone is bound to a contract. But you can freely change jobs without a LOR or any such nonsence. E-2 visa holders have their visa sponsored by thier workplace. F2-1 are sponsored by their spouse.

After 3 years on a F-2-1 visa you can apply for permanent residency. Until then you must re-new at immigration every year. Also, your spouse will need to show financial documents each visit (He/She can get them from the local Gu office).

I'm assuming your from the USA. Don't bother filing jointly for your US taxes. There is no benefit to do so. Like you if I combine my and my wife's income I go above the exclusion of $83,000??. I just file my income only with the IRS.

Your local immigration office is going to need to direct you. I changed cities under an F-2-1 and found each city office had their own interpretation of F-2-1 regulations. Congratulations and good luck!
