VE6UGH here,
I brought my Yeasu FT 817 with me from Canada as I wanted to carry around a nice portable radio with me. I have the mini station set up for SWL as there are no third party operating agreements between Canada and S. Korea. So I am not allowed to transmit, but I still like twisting the dial occasionally to see whats out there.

Hey Poet,
When I first came here 10 years ago the US and Korea didn't have any third party agreement either, but I have learned that now they do. So, I will bring my Allinco rig and tuner back when I go home at Christmas and try to get some type of balcony mount vertical (or wire) antenna up.
Gotta get the license paperwork started, as I'm told it takes a few months to get it processed. It will be interesting to work DX from this side of the big pond for a change. Feel free to stay in touch and if you'd like you can drop by and operate (assuming it is permitted here).
Also, you might try your embassy - they may have a club station you can use. The US embassy has a club station, but it is for embassy employees only. Also, the US army (Yongsan)has a massive club/MARS station, but I don't have base priviliges. Also, there is a club station here at the university where I teach, but they haven't been very receptive to my offer to give free English lessons in return for operating privileges there. Seems to be more of a private drinking/socializing club for them rather than a ham club. Oh well......
There used to be a couple of small stores selling ham gear at the Yongsan electronics place, but that was 8-10 years ago. Not sure now.
Maybe we can hook up some time and operate Field Day or do some exotic DX-pedition from Dokdo Island or somewhere. That would be fun.
I recently have been living in Cambodia and operated as XU7ADR from there. Pretty easy to work DX from there, as they don't have a lot of hams.
Anyway, take it easy.

Thats great, I'll check it out with the RIC's again...maybe they've been updated.
I don't have as much fun just SWL...there is so much interference here (and my antenna is a type of outbacker) that the noise to signal ratio is about 100:1.
I've got a car now, so perhaps I can mount a mobile antenna and go out to the country to listen at night sometime.
My wife and I have been thinking of going to the Philippines to live in a few years...so perhaps I can set up a station there again.
