There are so many ways to count things. Have you figured out a pattern for why they categorize things as they do? Ex.: "Han Mari" vs. "Han songi"? |

You mean the counters? jang=paper, mari=animals, myeong=people? Are you asking WHY they use counters? Or are you asking WHAT the counters are? |

개 = Fruits, supermarket things..
명 = People. Exclusively
마리 = Living things, such as animals. Or cooked ones.
병 = Things in bottles (like soju)
장 = Paper, or money (열장 = Ten notes)
송이 = Flowers, Plants?
번 = Can be used with time and things. IE I went there two times (두 번)
분 = Alternative to 명. More polite I guess. 몇 분있어요? |

Also "minutes" -- good for counting/telling time. "몇 분?" -- "How many minutes?"
To the OP: We have TONS of counters in English, but you don't notice them until you try to learn another language. For example:
"Hand me those three bottles of beer, please."
"They're next to the two sheets of paper, near the four slices of bread and the five cans of Coke."
"I'd like a carton of milk, please, and a tub of yogurt." |

Cool. Thanks all. I've been working with a teacher and I'm beginning to form some concepts. |
