I didn't know this one until my lady mentioned it today:

The Korean gov't is fazing-out the usage of "pyong" in sizing apartments. Apparently, Korea is currently in an "in-between" period where realtors are, by law, switching over to square meter apartment sizing.

I wonder if they'll also be doing away with the current stupid/dishonest system of counting the elevator, patio, parking stall, and front doorstep of the building as "living space."

Anyone heard more?

Yeah, starting July 1st it was illegal to only list pyeong. Don't know about counting the rest of the crap as living space. Seems stupid to me, too.

i was told by one of the staffers at our school that realtors are legally not allowed to say "pyong" in any of their business dealings.

Its stupid. The pyeong is actually much better a unit than the m2 for apartment size.

How is a unit of measure that isn't standard of precise a better unit than one that is?

1 square meter = 1 square meter. 1 pyeong could be anywhere from 3.2 to 3.4 square meters depending on how it's counted.

How the heck is that better? Isn't it better to use a system that is universal and precise?

Korea has otherwise embraced the metric system very well, so maybe it's best they do this just for consistency.

When Prince Charles ascends to the throne, will Americans have to recall all their yardsticks and release new ones with the measurement of the new king's foot?
