http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/this_world/6685441.stm

"It all began at Jena High School last summer when a black student, Kenneth Purvis, asked the school's principal whether he was permitted to sit under the shade of the school courtyard tree, a place traditionally reserved for white students only. He was told he could sit where he liked.

Tom Mangold interviewed primary witnesses in Jena
The following morning, when the students arrived at school, they found three nooses dangling from the tree.

Most whites in Jena dismissed it as a tasteless prank, but the minority black community identified the gesture as something far more vicious.

"It meant the KKK, it meant 'niggers we're going to kill you, we're gonna hang you 'til you die'," said Caseptla Bailey, one of the black community leaders.

Old racial fault lines in Jena began to fracture the town. It was made worse when - despite the school head recommending the noose-hangers be expelled - the board overruled him and the three white student perpetrators merely received a slap on the wrist.

....As racial tension grew last autumn and winter, there were race-related fights between teenagers in town. On 4 December, racial tension boiled over once more at the school when a white student, Justin Barker, was attacked by a small group of black students.

He fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, suffering bruising and concussion.

He was treated at the local hospital and released, and that same evening felt able to put in an appearance at a school function.

District Attorney Reed Walters, to the astonishment of the black community, has upgraded the charges of Mr Barker's alleged attackers to conspiracy to commit second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. If convicted they could be 50 before they leave prison."

"Mychal Bell was convicted by an all-white jury. His court-appointed defense attorney called no witnesses. Bell will be sentenced on July 31, facing a possible 22 years. The remaining five teens, several of whom were jailed for months, unable to make bail, still face attempted second-degree murder charges and a hundred years each in prison."

The strange thing about this story is that it seems ready-made for major news organizations but it hasn't gotten as much coverage as you'd expect. It got some coverage from the Washington Post, the BBC, MSNBC, the USA Today, Newsweek and Fox but nothing from The NY Times, the WS Journal, CNN, or Time Magazine.

I read about this a month or so before. I just didn't realize that any of them had been convicted. I just assumed that this whole deal was under a Hate Crimes Statute or something. It does seem a little extreme that someone getting jumped would be a second degree murder charge....Hell...there are murders that are treated more lightly....

Louisiana...

Definetely racial. Sounds like nothing more than a typical school fight issue that happens all over the U.S. everywhere.

In this particular case, a black kid beat up a white kid...and prison? WTF?

Yeah, this should be getting a lot more exposure. If it was in Los Angeles, people would be rioting.

This is similar to David Duke, a prior KKK guy running for political offices in Louisiana (the second largest african-american state by population in the country)...and I believe David Duke got a lot of votes FROM the black community as well and won some political offices in the state of Louisiana!

Something's not quite right in the State of Louisiana...

A beating that results in a guy spending two hours in a hospital qualifies as attempted murder? The attorney general might've done something that suggests racial bias (add NPR to the list of major news outlets that have covered this- I also read somewhere that CNN had some coverage of it on TV although searching for the "jena six" on CNN.com doesn't return any results). The claim about the AG is questionable, though.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12353776

"A few of the black athletes, the stars of the football team, took the lead in resisting. The day after the nooses were hung, they reportedly organized a silent protest under the tree.

The school called an assembly and summoned the police and the district attorney. Black students sat on one side, whites on the other. District Attorney Reed Walters warned the students he could be their friend or their worst enemy. He lifted his fountain pen and said, "With one stroke of my pen, I can make your life disappear."

That evening, black students told their parents that the DA was looking right at them. Walters denies that. Billy Fowler, a member of the school board, doesn't believe it, either.

"He said some pretty strong things," says Fowler, "but I don't think he was directing it to anyone in particular. I think he just wanted people to calm it down."

Wow, tough call here. Sure is tough to be a Negro in The USA nowadays.
Bad enough White people are catching on to the violent crime put against them by Black males so those Mississippi Burning bandwagons are a little less full lately. I can post some of those gruesome details about the Knoxville murders but I think that won't be necessary. The big kicker now is the Mexicans. Sure can't manipulate like them White people. They can run to another country. The Feds can't control them. Are we gonna see another Newark soon?

A few months ago, A Black man was caught burning crosses and he was given a slap on the wrist. So whats the big deal about these nooses?

What the big deal about the tree? Same with the barber shop. Maybe they don't want to do geri curls there or sell do-rags. Whats the point really? Its a frickin' barber shop. And a tree. Butt out. There are plenty of public parks off limits to White folk in the Midwest. Everybody knows we each have our own turf. I used to work for the Federal government. I found out that's a Black owned business wink-wink.

So whats your question? Why is wrong for six young Black males to attack a White kid? Big deal. So they go to prison a few years sooner. After that, they even get out sooner. That almost sounds like a favor.

I think its kind of interesting that the young man "fell". He "fell". Like "Oops, my darn shoestring!".

Attempted murder? Thats silly. They should be charged with "Teaching That White Boy a Lesson" in the first degree.

Could you post some links for the stories you're talking about?

This article does back up your claim of black people (or at least black women) being overrepresented in the federal government, at least as of 2003:

http://www.opm.gov/news/opm-report-shows-federal-government-continues-to-lead-private-sector-in-employing-minorities-and-women,36.aspx

"In 2003, African American women represented 10.9 percent of the Federal work force as opposed to just 5.5 percent of the Civilian Labor Force."

Of course that overrepresentation doesn't necessarily mean that black women are the beneficiaries of favortism.

Regarding the lack of media coverage, here's a thought: maybe the media getting burned so badly in the Duke lacrosse team case scared them off racially sensitive cases like this. Members of the media, the Duke faculty, the DA and some black leaders did go over the top in supporting that woman's very shaky allegations.
