BEIJING (AFP) - China's military successfully hacked into the Pentagon's computer network, raising fears it could disrupt the US defence department's systems, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

The Chinese military's cyber attack was carried out in June following months of efforts, the London-based newspaper said, citing unnamed current and former US officials.

While the Pentagon declined to say who was behind the hacking, which led to the shutdown of a computer system serving the office of Defence Secretary Robert Gates, officials told the paper it was China's People's Liberation Army.

"The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system," the paper quoted a former US official as saying.

One senior US official reportedly said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origin of the attack.

...The paper said both the US and Chinese militaries were widely assumed to conduct computer espionage on each other.

"But US officials said the penetration in June raised concerns to a new level because of fears that China had shown it could disrupt systems at critical times," the Financial Times reported.

...Reports of China hacking into German government systems were also raised last week...

Funny how the presence of a real army and a lack of exploitable oil changes the tune despite the far greater danger posed by the unthreatened adversary.

Everyone who knows anything about anything knows that everyone is always spying on everyone else all the time. Normally, it only makes the news when one country wants to 'punish' another country for some unrelated issue.

This particular story is interesting because it showed up first in the British media. I could be wrong, but I doubt it is about what the Chinese have done. It is more likely pay back for by the Brits for the 2 American generals criticizing the British for their policy in Basra that was in the media a couple of days ago. [It was a pretty silly exchange. A couple of retired British generals whined that the whole American policy in Iraq was wrong-headed after someone criticized the British policy in Basra at the time they are leaving. I think someone realized that criticizing American war planning in Iraq was not exactly trenchant and insightful at this point and decided they had to up the ante.]

Oh, yes, I'm sure the issues were directly linked. Rolling Eyes

Maybe you have condensation on your brain, but I don't want to appear condescending by saying that.

Please enlighten us, Mr. Wise One. Why was the announcement about hacking made at this time? What and whose political purpose is being served?

I admit I'm just a lowly ESL teacher in Korea with no access to government motivations and my guess about that link was just that--a guess.

Please tell us your authoritative view on the matter.

(Glad to see your spell check is back in working order.)
