Denmark arrests 'bomb' suspects
Danish police have arrested eight people with alleged links to al-Qaeda on suspicion of planning a bomb attack.

The eight suspects arrested late on Monday in Copenhagen form part of a terror cell with links to a senior al-Qaeda figure, police said.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 29, were of Afghan, Pakistani, Somali and Turkish origin, police said.

Denmark's contribution to the US-led military campaign in Iraq has prompted fears that terrorists may target it.

The country also drew anger from Muslims worldwide after a Danish newspaper last year printed cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

'Unstable explosive'

Eleven addresses were raided in Copenhagen during the overnight police operation, police said.

Buildings in the city's southern suburb of Ishoej and its Noerrebro district - both with large immigrant populations - were among those cordoned off by police.

The suspects held on Monday had been under surveillance for some time, police said. Six of them are reportedly Danish citizens.

"With the arrests, we have prevented a terror attack," Jakob Scharf, an official from the Danish police intelligence agency said.

"They also have been producing an unstable explosive in a densely populated area," Mr Scharf said.

He gave no details of what might have been the intended target of the alleged bombers.

Danish security services have conducted two major raids on suspected terrorists since 2005.

In February, a court sentenced a Danish citizen of Palestinian origin for involvement in a plan to blow up a European target.

Another three defendants in the trial were acquitted. One of them is awaiting a retrial.

And four men arrested last year in the city of Odense are due to go on trial on Wednesday on suspicion of planning terror attacks.

Dutch to withdraw troops from Iraq in March
(Agencies)
Updated: 2004-11-13 08:22

The Dutch cabinet has decided to bring home the 1,350 Dutch troops in Iraq in March next year, confirming a decision first made in June, the Dutch news agency ANP cited Defense Minister Henk Kamp as saying on Friday.

The Netherlands first sent troops to Iraq in August 2003 and won parliamentary approval this summer to extend their stay until March 2005.

Iraq's interim administration wants to hold elections in January despite mounting violence, and the Netherlands has come under increasing U.S. and British pressure to keep its troops there after March.

Foreign Minister Bernard Bot recently suggested that might be possible in unforeseeable circumstances, but Kamp said the cabinet had ruled that out.

The Netherlands is a strong ally of the United States, but public opinion is divided on its mission in Iraq. Two Dutch soldiers have died in Iraq, one in May and one in August.

The Dutch troops are based at Samawa in southern Iraq with orders to help with reconstruction and provide security and stability in a region where Japan has sent 550 non-combat troops to help rebuild the country.

I think it's about time for the Europeans to seriously reappraise their lenient immigration policies. At the very least they need to screen applications for asylum with greater scrutiny.

The writing is on the proverbial wall and the bombs are ticking away.

I find it very ironic that Denmark has traditionally been one of the most liberal and open societies in the world. I agree though that Denmark is not the only place where Jihadism finds fertile ground among the Muslim population.

I think that we have gone way beyond tightening up the immigration laws. Denmark and the other countries of the west need to seriously consider deportations of Muslims with any links to Jihadism.

I feel for poor India. They have only recently clawed themselves out to the sh-t of economic penury with their new IT efforts and now Jihadists are trying to de-stabalize the country. The west needs to wake up and wake up soon.
