You can get those cardboard boxes of cham-e-sool and they don't seem to show up on the airport radar.

Just take a case of plastic bottles via your suitcase. I brought 24 of them to the UK last winter.

Just buy nail varnish remover and drink that instead. It'll probably taste better, and it's probably safer.

Seven quid a bottle is pretty steep.

The difference is that when you buy soju outside of Korea, it's actually distilled from grain, rather than being a mixture of water, ethanol and flavourings. Hence the difference in price. Also, it would be illegal to sell Korean-style soju in the UK.

If I am NOT mistaken you are allowed to import, duty free, into Thailand, 1 liter of spirits.

You can carry (in your checked luggage) more, but be prepared to delcare it and pay duty on it. You are limited to 100ml going through security at check-in time.

Not declaring it subjects you to a charge of smuggling and smuggling carries some stiff penalties.

Under THAI customs law, a convicted smuggler faces a fine up to 10 times the value of the confiscated items and up to four years in prison.

If you do bring some back, do not take it in your carry on luggage. I believe that all liquids and gels are strictly prohibited.

You can buy soju in Thailand. Go to Foodland on Sukumvit Soy 5 and at Robinson department store on Sukumvit Soy 19.

A few years ago myself and a friend went to Thailand. We were meeting up with an old friend who used to work in Korea. He missed soju. So we brought him 6 -2 litre bottles of the stuff. When we arrived at customs, we decided to show it to the customs officials. They looked at it, asked us what it was. When we said it was soju, they just shrugged, said who cares and let us through.

Wow, people declare things at Customs? I've only been stopped once and didn't have anything to get busted with at the time. Do people actually get penalized? I've known people who've been caught bringing bags and bags of meat into Japan and they just took them. That's all that's ever happened from everyone I know, confiscated swords, religious icons, food, but they never claim them and never are punished. I always figured it was if it appeared that you were going to be turning a profit they'd fine you, but that's the only time.

It was our first time going to Thailand and we were a bit worried because we had 12L of soju. I wouldn't do it now, nor would I ever bother to bring soju with me.

OP:

A question: Why would you want to?

Soju from Korea, maotai from China and sake from Japan--all crap liquor if you ask me, even the "good stuff."
