With the benefit of hindsight, If there was one thing that I could have incorporate into my TESOL training that wasn't covered, it'd be a section devoted to chalk, or more specifically, how to use it properly.

I'm naturally no Michelangelo and have always struggled to illustrate the most rudimentary of everyday objects. My short-comings in using the blackboard to explain a piece of vocabulary was something that was made abundantly clear to me yesterday when, I attempted to draw a squid on the blackboard but actually produced something decidedly more phallic, much to the amusement of the students.

The lesson learned?

Clipart it.

Blackboard art is hit and miss. Like anything else, you need to practice the drawings before you try to use them to teach with.
