OK, so that's a bit over the top...But this is good news:

Favorable feelings up on foreign weddings
September 06, 2007
In supposedly homogenous Korea, eight out of 10 people say they have a favorable attitude toward foreigners married to Koreans and six out of 10 say they would allow their children to marry non-Koreans, according to a survey released by the Gender Equality Ministry yesterday.
The results showed a marked softening in attitudes toward foreigners from a similar poll conducted last year. The survey polled 1,000 adults across the country from July 31 to Aug. 2.

The latest attitude survey was conducted of 1,000 male and female adults over 19 from across the country. Some 72.6 percent of the respondents said there was no reason to stick to ethnic homogeneity. So did 64.8 percent of those in their 50s or older. Only 26.7 percent of the respondents said, ethnic homogeneity was a proud legacy that we should hand down to our descendants." The confidence level was 95 percent with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

Back to stats class for you....

It might be too early to declare xenophobia dead and buried here, but the series of editorials and articles that have appeared in the media since the UN report criticizing Korea has not died away, as it easily could have.

The first step to fixing any social problem is to acknowledge the problem exists. That is the phase we are in now. Koreans that affect public discourse have taken up this issue.

Step by step. Step by step.

If they followed proper methodology for a statistical survey (techniques used for selecting the sample group) then it can be fairly accurate. Usually the margin of error is around the 3 or 4% in such surveys.

I know, I know. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. We (that's the royal 'we') are here to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. (Unless someone can identify who said that first, I'll take credit for it.)

Plig, your white sheet is in the mail. We were able to get the blood stains out, but couldn't do a thing about the charred bit. I suggest you stay out from under burning crosses. Wink

Fair enough. Admittedly, I'm not the best at stats, and hated the required classes I had to take in University.

Perhaps I'm biased of the opinions of the Koreans I personally know.

Hope I'm wrong. Smile

We here on Dave's have been pro-interracial, -international, and -interspecies marriages all along. It's nice to see Korea's catching up. BTW, I suppose this sea change in national thought, namely this relatively sudden lowering of their guard on this issue, is not entirely unrelated to local aging bachelors bringing in wives from other tribes.

Wouldn't you agree, Attila? Hey, where's that boy been the past few days? His average posting rate is drifting dangerously close to 50 per day! Surprised

Before declaring the attitudes changing, I'd like to see the survey split down a little further. Let's how the percentage Koreans feeling positive towards marrying Whites, Blacks, Asians, Lations, South Eastern Asia, etc before proclaiming any sort of attitude change.

And, 30% (I'm sorry what? - 3 people out of every 10 you see) hate you.

Are your shoes too tight, Jongno? You are in an unusually cynical mood tonight.

Even if it is related to the number of foreign brides for Korean farmers, it wouldn't be the first time someone made a virtue of necessity (although I'm no expert on virtue). And is that so bad? Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Very Happy

Something tells me this is the direct result of Korea's inferiority complex that produces that thirst for approval from others we've all noticed. The UN said Korea needs to get rid of its pure blood myth and the Koreans SEEM to be saying, "How fast would you like us to do it, sir?"

On a down note, I do expect a reaction to set in against all this. As much as a certain element of the posting public likes to pretend all 48 million look and think exactly alike, it just isn't true and never has been. And that's not to mention that the nationalistic pure blood garbage did serve a useful purpose. What will replace it?

Thanks.
