My language exchange partner ran across this phrase. I explained what it meant and then said that once or twice when I was a kid, I DID have my mouth washed out with soap.
This was obviously a "cultural difference," and it freaked her out.
So...
Did anyone get their mouths washed out--literally--with soap when they were kids or were they always empty threats? Do they say this phrase in your country? If you could say where you're from, that'd be awesome.
Thanks. |

I thought you were going to rant about English teachers in Hongdae using curse words in public. Thanks for not doing that.
My grandma made me wash mine out for saying something I could say at home. Looking back, it must've been "crap" or "motherfukcing c()ntface." |

I'm from South Africa.
In primary school it was quite a common threat...It happened a handful of times in total in my primary school career (to other kids). |

Yep. Mom actually wrestled me to the floor and stuck a bar of soap in my mouth. No lie.
After I got big enough, she wasn't able to do it anymore. Unfortunately, this achievement was short-lived when Softsoap brand pump-soap dispensers became popular.
The nozzle fits in between the lips all too easily! |

Think about this happening in the US nowadays. That's grounds for prison! Abuse, poisoning and involuntary captivity! |

I think I tasted soap once. I forget what brand it was, but it wasn't very pleasant. Wasn't much of a fucking deterent either. I'm from America. |

Once or twice. Probably only once, I can't remember what I said but it was white bar soap and it stuck to my teeth. Awful awful. One of my friends got her mouth washed out with soap regularly, even once when I was visiting. I was horrified that they would do it in front of company. That's just not done!

In defense of Western Civilization, ask your language exchange partner what Korean parents typically did to kids who wet the bed. (It ain't pretty.) |

Yep, I've got a foul mouth which was much worse when I was a kid so I too tasted soap a number of times.
It was like: Teacher: "Here, put that in your mouth."
Me: "Ew, phuck!" |

It happened to me growing up in upstate New York.
I think I said "Dammit". Had to hold a small enough piece of soap in my mouth so my lips could close for 5 minutes.
One time was enough for me to learn my lesson.
Didn't swear in front of my parents again. |

my sister takes the kids tooth brush and puts soft hand soap on it and watches them brush their teeth for 1 minute.
Those kids never swear in front of their parents.
Say what you want, I've never heard of a kid stupid enough to do that twice. |
