Gentlemen and ladies of Dave's:
I'd appreciate your help. I've just about cleared the six-month mark here in the ROK, and lack of exercise has rendered me pasty and flabby, like a spindly Pillsbury dough-boy.
Back in the home country I did martial arts for fitness and self-defense, and I'd like very much to continue that. Before someone concludes that I'm truly clueless, let me mention that I did TKD for six years back home, and while I enjoyed it very much I'd like to do something different.
( Hapkido, I should also mention, does not appeal.)
I have smidge of experience with silat/kali, and I'd prefer something along those lines. I have a sneaking suspicion that there may, just possibly, be something like that here in Incheon, and if anyone who frequents Dave's knows about it and feels like sharing, I'd be grateful.
Alternatively, if you happen to feel like posting something funny or making witty and disparaging remarks, please feel free as well. I realize this is a bit of a long-shot.
Many thanks, JYN
( I hope I've got this in the right forum, and that I'm not missing any obvious FAQ forum posts. I looked around in there a bit but found nothing.) |

You're looking for something atypical in Korea? And I thought I was the one who liked tilting at windmills. |

There should be a few Muay Thai places around Incheon. Have a Korean friend or co-worker do a quick Naver.com search. Ever try gumdo? Might be worth a look. May not be practical for defense or anything, unless you always walk around carrying a cane or umbrella. |

Have you thought of boxing? Not exactly martial arts but it is something different if you've never done it before. I've heard of a place in Incheon that teaches it. |

Boxing actually seems like it could be interesting, and I've been told it's an incredible workout. Do you happen to recall anything regarding the name of the place, or its approximate location? Thanks, regardless, for the tip. Much appreciated. |

As for atypical martial arts searching, I'd settle for a decent 해동검도 dojo, NOT 대한검도, which most dojos are (and what I learned back in my uni days). Even my Korean co-workers don't have any idea where to find a 해동 dojo.
Course, if I had my druthers, I'd rather bone up on Krav Maga or Escrima, but the chances of that in Korea are less than nil. |
