Ok I am teaching a health class of all things to English speaking Korean highschool kids.

I was racking my brains to find health issues in Korea that one wouldn't get in a western country, and the only one I could come up with was saunas. The attitude of people to saunas here and in Asia in general is a lot more open, than it is elsewhere.

Anyone else out there know of health issues that are Korean only.

Also, anyone got a list of Phobias, that I could lay on my students.

My first coteacher once told me that you can get chicken pox from food poisoning and food poisoning from chewing gum.

She said this didn't apply to foreigners, only Koreans.

Yes, I'm dead serious.

There's a chapter on Health in the textbook 'Jazz English', but I'm not sure how effective it would be with high schoolers.

Fan death is pretty much restricted to Korea, so that is one lesson.

Then you could move into 'stamina foods'...that should cover a few weeks.

Then you might address issues like exchanging soju glasses and how germs are spread.

Another fun topic could be Stomach Cancer and Its Causes.

If you haven't been run out of town by that point, you weren't really trying.

How about cross-contamination of foods (as in cutting the raw pork and then cutting the kimchi.

Spitting and the spread of TB.

Traffic/Pedestrian safety.

Man, looks like you've got a lot of research ahead of you.

Might do something about sleep deprivation. Might be interesting to see what experts say about sleep deprivation and its effect on motor skills or academic performance.

If you're doing something about spreading germs, maybe touch upon pink eye, as its been going around.

There was an article in the paper a few months back---too tired to search for it---about a recent obsession among Koreans for building muscle, which the paper attributed to the crash-exercise plan by the actors in the movie "300." I'm sure students would be interested in learning about exercise, and you could probably talk about these insane workout regimens, in addition to steroids (as that's topical in international biking and other US sports).

You could do something about (for lack of a better term) "old wive's tales." What home remedies are popular in their homes, what are popular in yours? Kimchi cures all? Chicken soup cures all? Molasses?

Sleep deprivation definitely!

Latest research says that kimchie and soy bean paste (that is left to marinate) can cause stomache cancer.

You could do something on high-fiber diets vs. processed/ refined flour type diets.

Teenage circumcision~ is it too late to cut?
