|

Just to put the esl teacher hullabaloo in perspective.
| Quote: |
The South Korean government has estimated that at least 100,000 of its citizens are living illegally in Canada.
The data was collected by Korea's diplomatic missions in Canada, according to a report prepared by the country's foreign ministry.
The report said at least 350,000 Koreans are living illegally in foreign countries but the Foreign Ministry has no policies to deal with the issue or to provide help for the emigrants.
Considering that illegal emigrants were reluctant to disclose their identity for fear of being deported by foreign governments, the number could easily be higher, the ministry added.
The most illegal emigrants--nearly 183,000--were in the United States, followed by Canada with some 100,000.
There are about 46,500 illegal emigrants in Japan and 10, 000 in the Philippines, the report said.
"The ministry does not know exactly why and how so many Koreans became illegal emigrants," said Kim Sun-dong, an official at the ministry's Overseas Residents and Emigration Division, according to a report in the Korea Herald.
She said the Foreign Ministry believed most Korean illegal emigrants left for foreign countries with short-term visas and then settled there because of economic difficulties or for other reasons.
Most illegal Korean emigrants are engaged in retail businesses or work in small factories, the entertainment business or restaurants owned by Koreans.
"We think most went abroad with visiting visas and decided to settle there to earn money during the short time or just cannot get back to Korea due to personal problems," Kim said.
The ministry collected details for its report from Korean embassies and consulates. A ministry official said the missions had been asked to investigate illegal Korean emigrants but did not know how the data was collected.
The ministry said it had no long-term policies to deal with the illegal emigrant issue.
"To contact the illegal emigrants abroad is very difficult because many illegal emigrants avoid reporting to the authorities due to fear of deportation.
How can Korean missions abroad get an exact number of illegal emigrants and set any policies" Kim asked.

Great issue to post.
I'm sure the Korean government devotes as much time to this issue as weeding out and deporting illegal foreigners.
In Honolulu, I can say from firsthand experience that illegal Koreans (who overstay visitor and travel visas) abound. Most are driving cabs or working in hostess bars.
Same goes from parts of L.A. |

That's a lot. Just how many Koreans are there in Canada?
Could there be 100,000 illegal foreigners in Korea?
Found this: http://thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0004371
Most Koreans have settled in urban centres, particularly in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary; more recently, some are moving to smaller centres as economic opportunities change. As of the 1996 Canadian census, the number of Koreans in Canada was 66 655 (63 060 single response and 3595 multiple response). |

| What %, I wonder, are young Korean women who are working off obscene credit card debt? I know that the working-vacation visa in Oz is generally regarded as the Korean-hooker visa. Could it be similar in Canada? |

No, I think:
Koreans + easy access to visas = lots of illegal immigrants.
The US, Oz, Japan and Philippines have oodles of illegal Koreans too. 11th largest economy but they still behave like third-worlders, exporting babies and hookers around the world. No respect. |

I think western govts should come down hard on korean immigrants because thats what they do to foreigners here.
Someone should slip a word to Canadian immigration officials. Korea gets away with treating foreigners like kr@p here, time they got their own medecine. |

Indeedomundo.
Mind you, the world not giving a flying toss about Korea appears to have its benefits to Koreans in this situation, whereas Korea certainly does give a flying toss about.......
(it's almost a complement)

| Illegal Koreans in Canada have the same defense as illegal immigrants here: we wouldn't be here if they didn't hire us. Of course, for security reasons, borders have to become more well-policed, but I have a hard time getting worked up about illegal immigrants who work. |

Assuming they're working legally, I'd be inclined to agree.
We have enough of our own hookers, we don't need to import them from 우리 나라

That's an interesting guesstimation but 100,000 illegal Koreans in Canada in 2004 simply doesn't make much sense. The one who did it might not be good with numbers. Just think about how many Koreans are officially living in Canada.
| Quote: |
Canadians of Korean origin make up one of the largest non-European ethnic groups in Canada. In fact, the Korean community is the 7th largest non-European ethnic group in the country, after the Chinese, East Indian, Filipino, Jamaican, Vietnamese, and Lebanese populations. In 2001, just over 100,000 people of Korean origin lived in Canada. That year, they made up 0.3% of the total Canadian population.
