|
|
I met the man I thought would be my life-long partner in 2004. We lived together for three years, planned our futures together, dreamed of growing old, etc. He thought he would be able to get a work visa for the States, but it just so happens that immigration law is in a state of flux, and he will have to wait 5-6 years for his visa.
Although I offered to stay another 5-6 years in Korea to wait for him with no certainty he would ever be able to leave, he (as the more logical of us) suggested breaking off the relationship was the best thing to do.
If I was Canadian, it would not be a problem. But because I live in one of the most schizophrenic countries in the world, our dreams together are shattered and our love snuffed out.
My question is this: What business does the government of any country have in passing or protecting laws concerning what a person chooses to do with his or her own body? This goes even beyond marijuana use. The prohibition against gay marriage outlaws a loving commitment. How insane is that?

If gay marriage were legal, there'd be less reason for politicians to go cruising for wang in public washrooms.
Also, do you really expect everyone to believe you're a Baptist, Unitarian, UFOlogist homosexual? |

I'm sorry that happened to you, Daniel. But couldn't you have decided to settle down in Korea permanently, in the event that your partner didn't get his work visa? |

Because the OP could get his partner a spousal visa if the U.S. allowed it. |

It's a fooking lame and outdated law and 80% of Americans between 18 and 50 agree. It's a wedge issue that the GOP consistently brings up around election time, just like abortion and taxes.
Lame and corrupt dinosaurs making laws for future generations.

Thank you, Bramble. He and I discussed my staying in Korea long-term, and he is the one that did not want me to do that. I offered - he refused. I guess many would question the quality of love in his refusal, but I see his point. Sometimes, it is more loving to let go than to cling.
If there was not such an antiquated law pertaining to gay marriage in the US, though, we would not have had to make that decision. And we are certainly not the only couple to go through this experience.

Yes, I see it changing soon (soon being the next 10-15 years), but I regret the disparity between the thinking of the average American, and the old white closet homos making the laws.

Don't mean to sound homophobic but isnt marriage a biblical term used for a man and a woman couple? Anyways, i have no problem with homosexuals. Just thought I'd bring that up. |
