Who is responsible for the massive misuse of this phrase?

I'm for re-educating the masses. The next person who says "Cheer up!" to me is going to get a lesson on culture and emotional sensitivity. Who's with me?

(I'm having a bad week at school.) Confused

Very Happy

Actually I got tired of hearing it as well. I think it was printed in some middle school text book from the 1950's and now has become ingrained in the Korean English education system. I am working in Japan and have never heard it once.

I think what really bothers me is when I'm trying to communicate about a serious issue. I'm trying to solve a REAL problem and the response I get is something along the lines of... Life is hard. Cheer up!

ugh.

Interesting that it isn't endemic in Japan.

That would be like the time that there was a "misunderstanding" between the elementary school and the district office and my husband and I were told we were fired.
Cheer up, Kat! I almost punched her.

I ran into this today with some of my students. They saw a picture of a couple women, and felt that the women looked sad. They wanted to write a caption where one makes an encouraging remark to the other, and they suggested "Cheer up!" and "Fighting!"

I was a bit hard-pressed to come up with an equivalent, more appropriate suggestion. What would you say in that situation?
