Newcomers to Seoul need to learn when using a subway: Choose the right-hand side of the escalator if you want to just stand; choose the left-hand to walk.

So usually one sees a long line only on the right side of escalators in subway stations; and a few people walking on the left.

However, SMRT suddenly announced last Thursday that it will abolish the rule over safety concerns, while Seoul Metro said it will review the rule.

Basically, line 5678 say no more walking up on the left. Why?

Quote:
``In 2002, there were 16 accidents on escalators on subway lines five to eight, but the accident rate increased to 87 in 2006 mainly due to walking passengers on escalators,'' Kim Wan-gi, press official of SMRT told The Korea Times. ``We urge passengers not to walk on escalators because it is dangerous.''

Brilliant. So out of the millions of people who use the subway every year, there are 87 injuries on the escalators. Say it ain't so! 4 million people ride Seoul's subways every day. So that's 87 accidents per 1,460,000,000 rides a year (that's 1.46 Sagan billions). You have roughly a 1 in 10 million chance per year of getting injured on the Seoul subway.

Additionally one wonders how many take place on the stairways. Ever have some idiot stop dead in front of you on the stairs, during rush hour, to dig out his cell phone, oblivious to the fact there are about 114 people right behind him? Maybe Seoul will ban walking up/down stairs. Just to be safe.

Frankly, Koreans can injure themselves just standing still. Jesus H.

Oddly, the Toronto system implemented this "no walking" rule a few months ago.

Has everyone in public transit gone mad?
