So, I have my first class with a new after school class of 5th and 6th grade students. I have no idea who teh kids will be, so i can't be sure of level. I was going to talk with them tomorrow and pick out a book after the first class. I think there will be about 15, but the principal wants no limit on the class Evil or Very Mad , so there's no telling.
Does anyone have any good ideas for activites that will fill up about 40 minutes AND give me a good gauge of thier abilites.

I am asking my friend's at Dave's b/c I am so angry at my coteacher right now that I can't think straight (not going to go into that here though). So thanks for your help!

I'm already thinking about 2 truths and a lie. Got any more?

Let the children choose a western style nickname.

Name game- First students says," My name is_______ "The next student says "His name is______ My name is_______.
Go around the whole class until the last person has to remember all their names.

This is not just for speaking practice. If you can learn all their names quick
this helps with classroom rapport and classroom management issues down the road.

Play find someone who.

Sample questions

Find someone who has been to Cheju-do.
Have you ever been to Cheju-do?

Write at least ten things. Let the kids walk around asking questions.
Don't worry if the class gets a little noisy. As long as the majority of the students are using English.

If any time is left let them stand in a circle and toss a ball around asking questions.
