http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2880647

"Park Gyeong-cheol, spokesman for the Korean Medical Association, the biggest organization that opposes the legalization of tattooists, has repeatedly told the Korean media that tattoos can spread infections like HIV. Park claims that Europe, where tattooing without a medical license is legal, has seen numerous cases."

Is this on par with fan death scientifically or is there some validity to it?

I think it sounds pretty valid. Who really needs a tattoo anyway?

Black market and prohibition makes the good Doctor's argument look rather silly.

Sharing needles, sure. But tattoo needles? Come on. You'd have to use the needle again within 20 minutes to spread HIV. That's how long the virus lives outside the body.

Would you be willing to test that theory? Confused

Sorry, that didn't come out right.

I think most HIV is spread by sharing needles intraveneously. Research backs that up. Next is unprotected sex. Usually, the two are found in tandem in the highest at-risk or infected groups.

Tattoo needles however are, although quite capable of spreading HIV, far from the major reason there's an AIDS problem anywhere.

I'd have to see some pretty conclusive research to think tattoo needles were a major contributor to the spread of HIV. Korean medical experts need not apply. I have no respect for anyone stupid enough to perpetuate the myth of "fan death" from a medical standpoint.

Legalization and regulation of tattoos AND prostitution would solve 98% of the medical and disease problems in both those industries, not to mention the gain on taxes, increase in quality of services and reduced violence (against women, those whores).

I agree with you there. Is it true that prostitution was legal up until about a decade ago? Or was it just a bill on stronger measures on that law (as opposed to new laws) that was passed? Anyone know? With sources?

Paging Real Reality.....

I have heard it was legal until about 3 years ago. Now it's illegal, but when they bust brothels they often find the clients are people who are supposed to enforce the laws. It's a shame, too. Korea won't ever shut down hoing, they should do their best to make it safe for all.

BTW, I'm not one who needs or wants to buy sex (unless paying for dinner and drinks counts). I simply oppose government laws on morality in private establishments and homes (unless someone else is unwillingly at risk as a result of the action).

Legalized prostitution is not necessarily going to work out great...
